Weather notes show increasing cloudiness with scattered showers or thunderstorms west in afternoon and east in evening, cool Monday with a high near 60 to 70. Local incidents include multiple fire and alarm calls in the city late Friday into Saturday, plus several small-claims judgments and two funeral notices for Levi Alin and Chris Vetter.
A string of traffic fines includes speeding, leaving accident scenes, failure to yield, reckless driving, and invalid plates with amounts from $2 to $105. Several intoxication and display-plates cases are noted. Civil suits award various sums, led by Noel Wheeler vs. Oren W. Carter at $25.84 and other judgments totaling tens to hundreds of dollars for merchandise and services.
The Defense Department confirmed that four men suffered eye burns during atomic tests at Yucca Flat Nevada in 1952 and 1953. Two injuries are probably permanent. Two remain on active duty with minor reading difficulty. One former officer was blinded in an eye according to reports.

Robert Shufelt of 118 G avenue NW is seriously injured in a fall and remains in St. Luke's hospital with visitors permitted and dining open until 11 pm except Mondays. Wesley M. Bishop of 2334 Twenty-sixth street SW was taken to St. Luke's by ambulance after a heart attack and is listed in fair condition. Eunice Weaver is at Paula Beauty Salon at 515 1st Ave. SW. Bernard LaFlash of 300 First avenue NW was fined 100 dollars plus costs for intoxication after an early Saturday arrest when he tried to strike Officer Kenneth Vanous. Also noted are a flower show at Pierson's flower shop on 1800 llis boulevard NW with free roses for women and an antique show at Memorial Coli Armory today and tomorrow.
President and Mrs. Eisenhower spent their first full weekend at the new Gettysburg country home. The First Lady rode from Washington on Friday and the President arrived in the late afternoon. They planned to return to Washington by Sunday night or Monday morning.
In Philadelphia two detectives, after spending much of the time on the rink floor, arrested a burglary suspect who was ordered held without bail on charges of stealing $800 in jewelry from a home last week.
Washington AP soldiers tent is his castle says the United States court of military appeals in a ruling that orders a rehearing of Pfc. Robert W. Adams of Drew Mississippi who was convicted of murder after a fatal shooting in Korea. The opinion notes Adams retreated to his own tent and he fired after a corporal with two rocks in hand entered the tent. One shot killed the corporal and another struck a sergeant in the skull. The court did not accept the prior board’s reduction to voluntary manslaughter or the sentence cut from 25 to 15 years.
Attorneys asked the court of appeals to overturn Dr. Samuel H. Sheppard s second degree murder conviction on grounds of insufficient evidence and trial errors. They argue a rival suspect possibly a left handed killer used the weapon and point to press influence creating a hostile atmosphere. Oral hearings begin May 23 with a week for the state to respond by May 14.
Screen star Olivia de Havilland and French writer Pierre Galante wed in Yvoy le Marron central France in a village schoolhouse ceremony. It was her second marriage and his first. she is 38 and he 45, with a crowded meeting room of stage society in attendance.
In Los Angeles Dr. A. V. Andrews aged 51 collapsed during the Academy of General Practice convention. He entered Shrine Auditorium first aid, removed his coat, and lay down as an oxygen tank was started, but he died before the mask could be used.
Edward A Hayes aged 62 a prominent Chicago attorney and former national commander of the American Legion died Friday at Alexian Brothers hospital He led the Legion in 1933 and earlier sought the Republican senatorial nomination from Illinois He underwent surgery on March 14 for a bladder derailment.
In Chicago on April Fools Day telephone operators at the Adler Planetarium answered many prank calls for a "Mr. Star." The twist: the reply asked which star the caller wanted, noting there are millions of them.
Washington editorial calls for publishing Gen Douglas MacArthur messages to the joint chiefs before the 1945 Yalta conference to verify who sought to rewrite history. Gen Courtney Whitney asserts the pertinent files should be opened, denying Forrestal diary notes as misattributed and noting timing differences during WWII. Washington AP Joseph Ratti a master stonecutter who carved much of the National Episcopal Cathedral died Friday after falling from a scaffold 80 feet above ground while completing a gargoyle He was 67 and had worked on the cathedral for 12 years Officials said the accident may have been caused by a footing issue or a heart attack and noted this was the first serious incident in the cathedral project begun 48 years ago.
Robert O. Smith, 42, of 4620 Mt Vernon road SE, was fined 300 dollars and costs after pleading guilty to a drunk driving charge in district court Saturday. Deputy Harry Ackerman arrested him after a Friday crash on Mt Vernon road and Forty fourth street SE that struck Carlyn F. Bauman’s car. Smith was treated at St Luke's hospital for a forehead cut. Judge Floyd Philbrick set a payment plan of 50 dollars down and ten dollars monthly until the fine is paid.
Two petitions to enforce child support were filed Friday in Linn county district court. Ruth Smith, formerly Ruth Burroughs, sues Shannon Burroughs of Dawson Georgia for $15 per week in delinquent payments. Lillian L Brown, formerly Lil lian Stephens, sues Horace A Stephens of Rushville Illinois for $30 per month in overdue support. Both seek judgment on arrears and a court order directing payments from defendants’ home counties.
Janice Isabell Isabell of 642 Nineteenth Avenue SW received a suspended sentence in district court after a March 21 charge for passing a false $25 check at Kalell Super Market in Cedar Rapids. Authorities say she bought $17.16 in groceries, taking the rest in cash, with the check drawn on Merchants National Bank and signed under an alias. The initial 10 year term in the women's reformatory at Rockwell City was suspended during good behavior.
E L Papesh a Hiawatha man pled guilty to giving a false check to pay auto license expenses. Judge Penningroth suspended a four month sentence because the check for 33 60 drawn on Farmers State Savings bank at Independence was eventually honored. The incident occurred Feb 28 in county dealings.
The will of Joseph Jandl of Cedar Rapids was admitted to probate Saturday in district court. It names his wife Mary as sole heir. First Trust and Savings Bank was confirmed as executor without bond.
In a $300000 probe, Dr. Lauren B Hitchcock of the Air Pollution Foundation reports Los Angeles smog is man made and largely from industry 50 percent motor vehicles 40 percent and incinerators 10 percent. He says the eye burning crop damage and irritant effects vary by district and that air pollution is the mother of smog.
The legislature approved 31 bills with varied votes and sent five to the governor while the remaining 26 moved to the senate. Actions include booting abandoned refrigerators, posting octane data, banning roadside trash, classifying buckthorn as noxious, and boosting vital records fees. Sarah Jane Cline 86 wife of Charles L Cline moved from Spirit Lake to Cedar Rapids died in a Cedar Rapids nursing home after a long illness. Born in Iowa county 1868 she was a WCTU member and American Red Cross affiliated with Spirit Lake Methodist church. Surviving are husband three sons two daughters four grandchildren and a sister. Services will be at Spirit Lake with burial in Lake View cemetery. Body to be moved for services and burial.

Julia M Nolan aged 75 of 1113 Second avenue SE Cedar Rapids died in Boston at 2 a.m. Saturday after an extended illness. Born September 26, 1879 in Marengo she lived most of her life in Cedar Rapids and belonged to Immaculate Conception church and St. Isabelle circle. Survived by brother Michael Naan. Body to Cedar Rapids for 9 a.m. Tuesday services at Immaculate Conception Church conducted by Msgr. William H. Schulte. Burial at Mt. Calvary Cemetery. Rosary 7:30 p.m. Monday at Monahan funeral home. viewing after 7 p.m. Sunday and all day Monday.
