April Fools' Day origins tied to 1600s calendar reform
The custom began after King Charles IX adopted the Gregorian calendar in 1564 and some clung to March 21 through April 1 as the new year. English called prank victims April Fools, Scots April Gawks, and the day shifted from a new year observance to a practical joke tradition. The Old Farmer's Almanac links All Fools' Day to crop forecasting with a forecast of warm April weather and a possible mid April blizzard in the Midwest.
