Washington records show Congress reconvening after a 50 day recess with 54 senators present. Senator Harrison locks horns over tariff issues and President Harding notes a political clash while the finance committee advances the 1921 tax revision bill awaiting Senate action by late October.
A massive blast at the Badische chemical works in Oppau near Frankenthal wrecked the plant and devastated the town. Reported casualties exceed 800 dead with hundreds injured as shockwaves ripped through Mannheim and Ludwigshafen, halting telegraphs and trains.
In Kern County California nine hundred twenty seven deputy sheriffs and constables are deputized to keep the peace as oil workers strike broadens. Officials say several hundred more have been appointed since the strike began and a district council meeting is set for Bakersfield to plan statewide expansion.
In Dowagiac Michigan on September 21 three members of the Monroe family were murdered in their home. William Monroe his wife and their 17 year old daughter Neva were beaten to death with a club. Ardith Monroe 16 lay unconscious after head blows and a younger girl left blind. Investigators think an insane intruder may be responsible. two state hospital inmates at Kalamazoo had escaped two weeks earlier.
The treaties with Germany Austria and Hungary were sent to the Senate for ratification today by President Harding. They arrived with a brief transmittal note and were delivered to the Capitol by a White House messenger, with Senator Lodge of the Foreign Relations Committee meeting to begin consideration tomorrow.
General John J. Pershing returning to France aboard the liner Paria was escorted into Havre by French warships and torpedo boats. Crowds cheered as Pershing stood on the ship’s bridge and was welcomed by Captain Maurrat and Mayor Meyer, amid gun salutes and river traffic in Havre harbor.
The anti beer bill was called up in the senate by Senator Sterling after a conference with President Harding. The conference report, adopted by the house but filibustered in the senate, met fresh opposition as a quorum was demanded. The bill would prohibit physicians from prescribing beer and tighten regulations on wine and whisky for medical purposes.
New York Sept 21 Lowell Sherman actor in Arbuckle case vanished after leaving Harmon New York bound train with a woman. San Francisco district attorney Brady says Sherman is a necessary witness and will be compelled to return if he does not come back voluntarily. He hints at two possible serious charges.
Twenty five crew members of the Swedish bark Mont Banco reach San Francisco aboard the liner Marmora after being marooned for 54 days in the South Seas. They survived nine days on the open sea in small boats following the ship’s fire and beach landings on an island. The Mont Bianco was en route to Europe from Newcastle with coal when it caught fire.
Washington dispatch reports President Harding nominated Charles W. Pugaley of Nebraska for the agriculture secretary post. The announcement notes Pugaley’s qualifications and that the nomination followed earlier hints. Also named was Captain John K. Roloson for chief of the Navy Department’s Bureau of Engineering.
A major gas absorption facility aims to process 30,000,000 cubic feet daily using Ferris Casper pipeline gas. Gasoline will be recovered before refining, with operations ready as the Carbon county pipeline reaches Casper. Midwest Refining and Standard/Purchase agreements ensure full output buyers.

Damon Mickilson 60 wealthy livestock grower of southwestern Wyoming died at his Big Pingy home after a protracted illness stomach trouble. his Green River valley holdings ranked among the state’s finest. Milo Barker 55 Tensleep owner of a large herd died in Cheyenne while being moved toward California for climate relief. his wife and daughter accompanied him and the body will return to Tensleep.
After a jury verdict in a liquor transport case, defendants Dick Casserley Frank Hill and W R Hyland face perjury charges. Defendants appealed with counsel J G Vanatta and M F Ryan. Sheriff and deputy pursued the car, gunfire occurred, and statements about ammunition and car contents emerged during proceedings.
LANDER Wyo Sept 21 A yield of 874 barrels per acre for dry land oats was recorded by H W Scrogging a farmer near here. The crop was harvested and threshed with no irrigation used.
Vienna reports from Sept 21 that Stephen Friedrich former Hungarian premier arrived at Oedenburg Burgenland and proclaimed West Hungary a republic. insurgent bands in Burgenland reportedly reinforced now totaling about 30 000 armed men, with Carliots and Legitimats said to be in dispute over Burgenland.
The 6.7 mile Wyoming and Missouri Valley line in Crook county was sold at auction in Ocueyenne to Mahlon and Kommerer of Pittsburgh for 544000 to satisfy a Kemmerer judgment. The sale included two locomotives a passenger coach and mining equipment. Rumors circulated that Kemmerer intended to extend the line toward Sheridan and Billings but were not credence.
Scores show Brooklyn 101 to 70 over Pittsburgh before rain halted play in the seventh inning as Hatterles Mitchell and Taylor plus Morrison and Gooch featured. Cincinnati game postponed by rain. Chicago and Washington results unclear with additional notes on rain delays and suspended games.
In Washington the Chicago team won 26 to 1 as Faber and Schalk allowed an 86 run total. Philadelphia’s St Louis game was postponed by rain. New York’s Detroit game postponed due to wet grounds. Cleveland defeated Boston 58 to 168 with Caldwell Morton O’Neill Jones Thormahien and Walters listed as batters and pitchers.
The Chicago Broom Manufacturer at a meeting blamed movies and cars for broom neglect and launched a campaign to popularize sweeping again after a 100 percent increase in broom longevity in recent years.
Attorney General Daugherty and Director Burns discuss potential federal investigation into the Ku Klux Klan with no clear decision yet. Reports note proposals by Rep Tague to pursue action, while other inquiries continue in New York and Massachusetts.
Albuquerque Sept 21 With county returns in Bursum Republican leads for the state senate appear secure. Campaign manager Phillips says Bursum will win by a substantial margin likely over 7000 with mountain precincts still to report. Dene headquarters indicate Burwins likely victorious though figures are not final. Amendment results remained unavailable from outside counties.
