Washington Feb 14. The Fordney emergency tariff bill resumes as the first Senate business on reconvening after being set aside for appropriation measures. Supporters expect final action by Wednesday. Senator Smoot Utah defends his sugar schedule amendment saying it raises sugar by one cent per pound but is less burdensome than the original.
Oil firms in New York and other regions announce wage cuts for field workers effective immediately. Casper reports show a 45 percent wage drop seen as a return to sound economics after wartime inflation, with New York Oil Company cutting the most and other large firms reducing by ten percent across all field labor.
The Scandinavian American Bank of Fargo did not open as the state bank examiner ordered its closure. Officials cited no official reason, though the institution has been tied to a recent Bank of North Dakota audit and prior closures and reopenings.

Hearing set for Feb 23. alleged cuts to 30 cents from 37 1/2 cents per hour. seven day week for dispatchers, previously six. Detroit reacts that Erie case tests nationwide wage actions. union leader Grable cites potential wider impact and cites other lines like the J Louie & Southwestern considering similar measures.

In Trinidad on a hillside target range near Morley a 5 caliber automatic pistol discharged while Pasquale Barsano handed it to Jos Gallo. Gallo, 28, a coal miner, was shot in the right breast and killed instantly. Ralph Gallo and two others witnessed the accident.
Lena Bowers surrendered after killing Ben James at the Lee Walter ranch near Kirby. A coroner jury found the killing deliberated and malicious, leading to a first degree murder bound over to district court. Bowers aided officers by revealing a moonshine plant in a nearby cave and then surrendered to J. B. Wright who handed him to local marshal.
J. J. Iten, president and founder of the Iten Biscuit Company of Omaha, dies in Los Angeles at 54 after a surgical operation in August. The firm has branches across the Middle West.
Miner of Lusk E B Lorimer was struck by a Ford touring car at First and Center streets just after 7 PM. He accuses MacIlvane of careless driving and violating a traffic ordinance. He was taken to Henning hotel and may pursue charges.
Jackson may owe up to 1200 dollars in income tax and penalties on 35000 dollars said to be received during the 1919 World Series. Attorney James H Price, retained by Jackson, said Treasury officials began efforts to collect tax on 5000 dollars after Jackson’s alleged confession. Jackson claims the money was a gift and a Treasury decision is expected soon.
Washington February 14 the House rejected an amendment to the naval appropriation bill by 124 to 30 that would have barred the use of any portion of the 90 million dollars in the measure for continuing naval construction until the president convened an international disarmament conference.
Athens reports that power station strikes ended after King Constantine met deputations and intervened on behalf of the workers.
A truck returning from Haygood farm left the road southwest of Sprague flats and rolled 20 feet down an embankment. Twenty people were slightly injured while two suffered more serious injuries. Victims include William Boles with a sprained ankle and George Morrison with leg and thigh bruises.
Formal denials were filed in a Chicago criminal court on behalf of Claude Williams Joe Jackson and George Weaver all Chicago Americans players indicted in the 1919 World Series betting case. The petitions seek bills of particulars and reiterate that the players deny throwing games or conspiring to do so. Weaver did not appear before the grand jury. The document notes funds alleged to have been unlawfully obtained from Charles K Nim a a bettor who lost about 260 betting on Chicago versus Cincinnati. Judge Dever said he would hear arguments Wednesday.
Five masked men attacked the farm home of B. H. Jones near Parnell. They bound Jones his son and daughter and ransacked the house taking 26 dollars, diamonds and other jewelry. The robbery was reported by Associated Press.
Andrew L. Drummond aged 16 and described as a former chief of the United States secret service died at his Brooklyn home on Saturday. He was noted for his investigation of the Ku Klux. The second sentence references mountains of the moon being larger than earthly ones.
Robert L. Crowder 49 a homesteader was killed instantly on his dry farm near Rio Valley when a disc plow drawn by mules jolted over frozen ground. His son, who had just left the seat, witnessed the accident as Crowder fell and suffered a fatal neck fracture.
AP dispatch from Chicago reports the United States Railroad Labor Board dismissed the Atlanta Birmingham and Atlantic wage clash for lack of jurisdiction. The ruling followed the carriers’ claim that payroll costs 71 percent of operating expenses hindered any wage cuts. In St. Louis, reinforcement of a 42 cent hourly wage for Texas division track workers on the St. Louis and San Francisco Railway was ordered by President J M Kern.
