The pocketbook of Thomas J. Humes, president of the fair association, was found on the State Fair grounds by Dr. Bufkin of Carthage. It contained a 1793 half dollar and a written receipt that helped locate the owner. Dr. Bufkin handed it to Ben L. McFarlan, who restored it to Humes, who suspects a previous donor may have misread the gesture.

A Chicago visit exposes a cosmopolitan, crowded city with a large immigrant electorate and rising labor tensions. The writer notes widespread vice and poverty, discusses disfranchisement fears for naturalized Americans, and cites police corruption, tenement squalor, and the Fresh Air Mission.
