Benjamin Steere Pioneer Florist Dies at 84 in Carthage
Benjamin Steere died in his 85th year at his north Main Street home in Carthage Indiana on March 13 1902. He was born May 29 1817 in Mount Pleasant Ohio and moved to Michigan in 1834 where he became a respected school teacher. He married Emily Hoag in 1848, who died in 1897. Steere ran a successful nursery business after moving to Adrian Michigan in 1891 with his wife and daughter Grace. He leaves three daughters Florence Henley Ida Henley and Anna Steere and five children Ida Florence Anna Grace Howard with Grace and Howard both deceased. He was a Birthright Friend and active in horticulture publishing on the Pomological Society of Michigan. Funeral held at the Friends church with Rev. Alpheus Trueblood officiating.
