Pioneer matriarch Mary Rhodes Rabys dies at 99 in Rush County
Mary Rhodes Rabys, born 1799 in Bedford County Pennsylvania, died March 12 1899 in Rush County Indiana. Daughter of Phillip and Mary Rhodes, she married Jacob Raby in 1823 and raised five children. The family migrated from Ohio to Indiana in 1825 and settled on land she occupied for 75 years. Widowed in 1835, she supported her children through harsh pioneer life, later reduced to limited work but enjoyed neighbors visits. She left 18 grandchildren 43 great grandchildren and 6 great great grandchildren.

City sues Mattox in bond case over treasury shortage
Special to Indianapolis Journal Rossville Ind March 9 Suit filed by the city against Treasurer J K Mattox and nine bondsmen to recover a shortage of 5060.92 from 1894 1898. Total shortage 7580 Mattox turned over property to bondsmen who advanced 2510.08. Bondsmen sought settlement with no further payment and 120 taxpayers urged settlement. Council offered 3600 in full and arbitration was proposed but rejected. The bondsmen retain three law firms.
