President yesterday sent to the senate the nomination of Ethan A. Hitchcock of Missouri as secretary of the interior. Hitchcock, now ambassador to Russia, previously led the Pittsburg Glass Co in St Louis and is a descendant of Col Ethan Allen. The nomination was confirmed by the senate. In Somerville, a letter to Willard C Post 189 G A R criticizes President Ripley's Atlanta speech advocating government aid for Confederate cemeteries.
General Nelson A Miles testified before the war investigating commission in Washington December 22. He condemned canned beef as embalmed and blamed someone in Washington for the issue. He urged that landing facilities for the Santiago expedition were inadequate and that troops faced ration and medicine shortages and exposure risk.
