Hitchcock Named Interior Secretary in U S Senate

President yesterday sent to the senate the nomination of Ethan A. Hitchcock of Missouri as secretary of the interior. Hitchcock, now ambassador to Russia, previously led the Pittsburg Glass Co in St Louis and is a descendant of Col Ethan Allen. The nomination was confirmed by the senate. Miles Testifies On Embalmed Beef For Troops

General Nelson A Miles testified before the war investigating commission in Washington December 22. He condemned canned beef as embalmed and blamed someone in Washington for the issue. He urged that landing facilities for the Santiago expedition were inadequate and that troops faced ration and medicine shortages and exposure risk.
