A historical analysis explains why rising telephone subscriber numbers raise per unit costs. Three factors are highlighted: operating costs rise with more subscribers, installation costs grow as service becomes individualized, and general expenses increase due to higher wage and material costs. The piece argues that larger exchanges demand more operators, heavier infrastructure, and heavier switchboards, inflating unit costs despite greater individual value.

Demand for better service prompts higher telephone rents

The Indiana Independent Telephone Association bulletin notes that demand for improved and reliable service forces companies to employ skilled labor at higher costs. Traction lines and power systems require individual metal circuits, doubling copper or iron needs per subscriber. Substantial subscriber growth, better service, and unseen operational costs justify increased per unit rental beyond prior, reasonable rates.
