Arrest of Lew Stanley Over Alleged Red Heifer Theft
A misunderstanding led to Lew Stanley’s arrest on grand larceny charges by T Ke Hill after claims he stole a red heifer from Hill’s premises. The case, heard by Squire Adam Sigard in Blue River township, was dismissed due to a faulty affidavit. Stanley stated he bought 11 head of cattle at Elwood Hill sale on March 27 including two red heifers, one jersey calf, paying 1650 dollars plus 15.50. He says Hill’s sons Gurrey and Charles helped identify his cattle and drove them to the road, and cites a telephone miscommunication as the cause of the arrest. Stanley, a young stock dealer, regrets the misunderstanding and defends his conduct.
