Mrs. Rachel King receives a letter from Pvt Robert King stationed in Germany. He reports being 12 miles from the Austrian border and 25 miles from Switzerland in the Alps. He says it is not like home but the country is very beautiful and he likes it.
The Carthage Lions Club launched its eleventh year at the Lions Den with sixty members and guests. They voted to again run the cat stand, sponsor a parade float, and support the Fall Festival. Guest speakers included Indiana District Governor Hugo Gale and Mr Carmony who spoke on Korea and showed slides. Carol Ewing performed piano numbers, and Gale thanked members for their district role.
At the board of directors meeting held at the Community Center Tuesday night, the three officers whose terms expired were reelected for another year. They are Harry Bentley, Howard Winslow and Donald Ruby.
Rev and Mrs Basil Stultz learned of the death of Mrs Humphries the mother of Mrs Stultz in Guthrie Oklahoma. The death occurred Sunday evening and burial is planned for Tuesday afternoon.
Mr and Mrs Carl Carson Jr welcome a son named Mark Edward born Saturday evening at Henry County Hospital New Castle. Grandparents are Mr and Mrs Fletcher Edwards and Mr and Mrs Carl Carson Sr.
Mr and Mrs John Porter spent the weekend with Mrs Porters brother Joe McClurg and family at Vevay. On Sunday the group attended the fair at Louisville Ky.
Marlin L. Sandefur of Shepherd Field Wichita Falls Texas visited his parents Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Sandefur this past weekend.
Mrs. Fred B. Sims has accepted a position in the Charlottesville school as music teacher and began her duties Monday. Kay Sims is attending school in Greenfield, where they will reside later.
Seventeen Brownies celebrated Ho bo day at the home of leader Mrs Hazel Roberts with Nancy Marsh and Nerva Pope present. A mulligan stew meal followed and Kay Addison won best dressed hobo prize. Next meeting set for September 25 at the Library after school.
Mrs Nancy Ryan widow of Rev Daniel Ryan celebrated her 103rd birthday Friday at her Liberty home. Her son Dolph Ryan lives with her and aiding guests included daughters Hollis Beard of Liberty and Theresa Maxwell Conover of New York City. The Rev Ryan married in 1867, preached 39 years, retired in 1920 and died in 1922 at 75.
Mrs. Fred Flick spoke Monday night at the Knights town Garden Club. The session was at the Knightstown Furniture Store and featured a talk on Flower Arrangement.
The first Parent-Teachers Association meeting is scheduled for Tuesday September 15 at 6 30 PM in the Community Center. A pitch in supper is planned and President Hubert Hunt urges all members to attend and welcomes newcomers.
The annual church picnic will be held after morning worship at Henry Stinger grove east of Carthage. A pitch-in dinner is planned for the noon hour.
Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Perisho of Lincoln Nebraska returned Saturday to the home of Mr. and Mrs. Fred White after a 14 week absence in Oxford England for the 300th anniversary Conference of Quakerism. They visited France and Holland. Mrs. Perisho spoke on their trip at the Friends church in Charlottesville. Their children stayed with grandparents during the England visit and joined the parents for the return to Lincoln where Mr. Perisho teaches.
Mr and Mrs Lowell Leisure and family attended the Gray reunion Sunday at Greenfield.
Donald Mann accompanied Mrs. Mann home from the hospital on Wednesday morning after she spent several weeks in Chicago. She is reported to be improving nicely.
A state wide survey of 22 automatic traffic counters shows July gains over July 1951. U S 421 south of Medaryville records the largest rise at 2911 to 2662 daily average, up 9.4 percent. Other routes show smaller gains with Carthage county road and State Road 1 near Farmland logging marginal increases.
Mr and Mrs Fred Flick attended the State Fair for several days last week. Ani Fitch and her son Glen visited relatives in Kentucky over the weekend. Glen will return to an army base in New Jersey on Monday September 15 following furlough.
Mrs. Iva Cook described the Indiana Home Economics Chorus visit to the Toronto Exposition. The grounds, coliseum, and grandstand drew large crowds as the chorus performed opening events and night shows. Visitors enjoyed sailing displays, a championship swim, and lodging in Lake Ontario motels as crops like corn soybeans and tobacco were noted.
GOP candidate George N. Craig urged paying the Indiana veterans bonus promptly with no tax rise. He proposed borrowing about 23.5 million dollars from the general fund to start early payments in 1953 and repaying as bonus collections come in, funded by future bonus tax receipts.
Donald Cooper of Ripley Township was elected president of the Rush County 4 H Junior Leader club at a meeting held Monday night at the Odd Fellows Temple. Officers elected include Doris Truitt as vice president and Virgie Lou Sunman as secretary treasurer. The club will install officers at the October meeting and serve a year.
Rush County hosts the Sixth Annual District Southeastern Indiana 4 H Fat Steer Show and Sale on Saturday September 13 with 174 entries total. The morning judging begins at 9 00 and Gerald Oledfelter will judge while the 1 00 sale features auctioneer John Friedersdorf. Buyers include Packers restaurant owners hotels and merchants. For the first time no limit is placed on the Grand Champion price, allowing any bid to win. Forty steers from 19 Rush County exhibitors will be offered including Harold Miller Thomas F Mills Joe Moster Charles Norvell Richard and Susan Stevens Duane Newhouse Carl Smith Garry Warrick Bob Harrold Bernard Leising Paul Leising and Raymond Leising.
The schedule lists Friday September 12 games Carthage at Mays New Salem at Arlington Manilla at Raleigh and more through October 3 with matches at 3 30 p m DST and 2 30 p m CST. The county champion is determined by the best record in the round robin with potential playoff if tied.
Sue Ann Truitt and Mary Lu Pike returned Saturday from the Girls' School at the State Fair. Miss Marianne Lauber and George Ball of Indianapolis visited Mrs. Grace Porter Saturday evening. Harvey Kesler of Peoria accompanied by his parents visited the Overmans. they had been returning from Cincinnati after a funeral. Mr. and Mrs. Walter Chonan took their son Robert to Butler University for preliminaries this week. School proper starts Monday, Sept. 15.
Dr. and Mrs. H. L. Hensler returned from a Texas vacation Wednesday evening and were supper guests of Mr. and Mrs. Joe Porter and their children.
The first stated Obligation Night of the C E 8 Chapter of the Order of Eastern Star was held at the Masonic Hall. Local members delivered 106 dozen cookies to the Franklin Masonic Home and shared Raleigh chapter cookies. A 40th wedding anniversary for Guy and Chloa Ewing was celebrated with friends, gifts, cake, and well wishes.
Lt. Robert Carroll announces a 9 30 p m Sunday broadcast on Station WIRE Indianapolis featuring Ross Manche a local draftee. The ten minute interview from Camp Gordon Georgia covers basic training and promotes The Typical Draftee series by the Army and Selective Service of Indiana.
An error in last week's issue omitted Guy Ewing from the Skywatch program defense committee listing and readers are advised of the correction.
Paul Jackson a 4-H Club member from Ripley Township earned an honorable campers award at the State Fair 4-H Club Camp. The closing session announced awards for over 500 campers, with only ten receiving honors for character cooperation sportsmanship leadership habit and camp duties. Paul is the son of Mr and Mrs Leonard Jackson.
The Band Boosters announce a scrap iron and paper drive to be held Saturday September 20. The event was postponed due to rain and funds are needed to pay for eight new uniforms. Band members and volunteers should meet at the drug store at 8 30 a m and those with scrap iron or paper should contact Mrs Sharon Hunt at 6 202 if not contacted.
VACATIONERS Mr. and Mrs. Thomas HE Bush returned Sunday from a week’s vacation through the East. Miss June Kinder spent a week’s vacation at Cedar Lake this week. Miss Phyllis Small, Mr. and Mrs. Elmer McMichael and Miss Judy Collins of Knightstown left Saturday for a two weeks trip to California to visit Mr. and Mrs. Billy H. Small.
The Rev Edgar C White and many relatives and friends attended Yearly Meeting this week in Richmond. Among those present were Mrs Fred White Mrs Myrtle Carfield Mrs Olive Drysdale Rev and Mrs Everett Chapman Mrs Omar Heim Mrs Eugene Gardner Mrs Goldie Kyser Mr and Mrs Howard E Henley Mrs Faye Burkher Miss Ruth White Mr and Mrs Jesse Henley Mrs S L Newsom and Mrs Anna Anderson.
The Fall Festival committee met at the Community Center to plan October 3 and 4 events. Members include John Allen Ruby chair, Mrs. Harry Leisure, Mrs. Hubert Hunt, Eugene Gardner, Donald Ruby, and Harold Ruby. A home talent show titled The Greatest Show on Earth is featured and open to participants.
J. E. Bennett of Carthage Indiana sold five purebred Aberdeen Angus cows and a bull to John K. Wood of Indianapolis. A Sunday picnic at the Stinger home honored James Crews Jr of Indianapolis who soon enters the armed forces, with several Indianapolis guests attending. Additional visits and travels include Brown County Park and other Indiana gatherings among local families.
Carthage school opened with regular classes last Monday and posted enrollments by grade from Grade 1 to Grade 12 totaling 519 students. Principal Ira Meade announced Kindergarten starts next Monday September 15 and emphasized birth certificates are required. Mrs. Fred Flick is the teacher.
E L B O W members met at Mrs. Mary Carson home with ten members and two guests. The Home Garden club picnic at Ruby cabin included 11 members and three guests with speech on Trees. Various local residents hosted Sunday visits and noted illness and Eisenhower rally attendees in Indianapolis.
