This week at the Indiana State Fair broke attendance records with 42,786 paid admissions on Sunday and a Labor Day crowd of 115,000, the largest in the fair’s history as visitors from near and far viewed the Hoosier state on parade.
Roscoe Turner, renowned speed flyer, claimed the 300 mile Thompson Trophy at Cleveland in a record 283.419 mph before about 300000 spectators. He led his closest challenger by more than ten miles.
Twenty years after 1918 Europe readies for conflict as Germany rearmament alarms neighbors. French and German troops mass on the border and Chancellor Hitler rejects coalitions while the Sudeten issue risks a wider war. France suspends military leaves and rushes forces and ammunition to the frontier.
Three Knightstown boys won the junior livestock judging contest at the Indiana state fair with a record score. Team members were Robert White Eugene Deck and Russell Hardin coached by A C Sharpe at Knightstown High School. Other county teams finished Putnam Madison Tippecanoe Jay Union Wayne Howard Elkhart Huntington.
Two Purdue professors H. B. Hass and Dr. S. B. Lipplingott reported a practical lab method for producing a base material at the American Chemical Society meeting in Milwaukee. The finished base is said to be adaptable for perfumes soaps films artificial silk lacquers flavors and related items, reducing production costs across multiple industries.
Patrick Joseph Cardinal Hayes of the New York City diocese died in his sleep at his summer camp near St. Joseph New York. He was found by his secretary Mgr John J Casey who had gone to awaken him.
Douglas Corrigan visited Crosley Field in Cincinnati for a baseball game and took a turn at bat. He hit the ball but ran toward third base instead of first, creating a comical miscue during the Saturday event.
Senator Pat McCarran, opponent of Roosevelt's Court overhaul, appears to win renomination by a large margin despite New Deal opposition and two New Deal backers. The trend marks the fifth loss for the New Deal in show-down elections, with Texas California South Carolina and Idaho displaying opposition to presidential endorsements.
Indiana enters the height of the 1938 tomato canning season with plants operating at capacity in two weeks and about 33 000 workers employed. The industry ranks among Indiana’s top employers, aided by state employment offices in recruiting temporary labor. Madison county leads with 43 plants, while other counties contribute several facilities. The season faces weather-related crop reductions and a smaller local DeSchipper plant.
Mr and Mrs Gail Alexander of Battle Creek Michigan and his father Thomas Alexander visiting Battle Creek called on Mr and Mrs Edgar Alexander on Friday while en route to Miami for a few weeks stay.
Miss Ruby McGeorge has gone to Middletown to take a teaching position in the public schools. Miss Grace McGeorge departs for Lancaster Indiana to teach in the Lancaster schools this week.
A nine pound son named Larry Jan arrived Wednesday evening, August 31, to Mr and Mrs Rayburn Fitch at the home of Mrs Fitch’s parents Mr and Mrs Charles Weaver.
Mrs J B Terhune has improved after a week of illness. Almond Murfin, previously ill with heart trouble, is improved. Edgar Alexander recovers enough to get about after a severe bout of quinsy.
Mrs. Margaret Hill McCarter aged 78 died Wednesday August 31 at 3 p.m. in a Topeka hospital after a severe heart ailment. Survivors include husband Dr. Arthur McCarter two daughters one son a sister and a brother. Native of Carthage she taught in Carthage schools 1879 to 1882 and was an author and noted speaker. She was the only woman honored at the National Convention in Chicago and spoke at a Republican rally in Rushville.
Mr and Mrs S L Newsom and Miss Winona Newsom attended a Northwestern Territory celebration in Terre Haute on Saturday night. The Mayflower room hosted a pioneer supper marking the hotel’s 100th anniversary, originally named Prairie House. The Caravaniers led by Mr Applegate presented a territory history pageant with speakers Everett Sanders and Bonnie Fairwell. About 500 people were seated for the pioneer supper including Henry Henley and family.
The East Street Christians church plans a reception next Thursday evening September 15 at 7 30 to honor new pastor Rev Wayne Newcum his wife and new church members. The event will be held at the church.
Mr and Mrs Bayard Baker received word at 1 PM Tuesday night that Virgil Jones of Indianapolis died on a train en route to Pittsburgh. Jones had worked for Holcomb and Hoke out of Indianapolis and was a friend of the Bakers and visitors to Carthage.
Mr and Mrs Chester G Hill Earl Tweedy and Henry Addison attended the funeral of John Stenger in Charlottesville Sunday afternoon.

On September 1 six Ripley Township 4-H youths toured Indianapolis sites including Union Stock Yards Municipal Airport and Kingan Packing plant. They viewed hog and cattle handling packing steps and a meat processing sequence before a noon meal by the Producers' Commission Association.
Ripley township earns several ribbons at the Indiana state fair livestock shows. Elizabeth Stoner placed second in the open class with a Rambouillet yearling ram, the lone girl exhibitor in the ring. John Stoner took third in the 4-H Rambouillet ewe lamb class, while Philip Winslow and Donald Stoten Jr. placed eighth and eleventh in 4-H senior dairy heifers.
George Kolb, who defended himself in the Hancock circuit court nine years ago on a murder by poisoning charge, is back home in Rush County as a free man after serving nine of a 2 to 21 year sentence. He is 68 and in good health. The case drew wide attention for his self defense and the trial duration.
Morristown High School announces a new $50 000 addition including a gym and several classrooms. Final inspection by federal engineers has occurred and acceptance is expected this week. The 113 by 93 foot expansion was funded in part by a federal grant of $23.
Mrs. Farris Nibarger aged 34 died Tuesday afternoon at 3 45 while being rushed to Methodist hospital in Indianapolis. Survived by husband Charles Pickering, her parents Mr and Mrs Charles Pickering, two sisters Mrs John Morris of Winchester and Evelyn, five children Ruth Evelyn Catherine Helen Farris Jr and Fred. Funeral Friday at two at the Dr Coleman farm home two miles north of Carthage with Rev Orrow Kennerly presiding. Interment in town cemetery.
Bloomington Ind Sept 8 Officers and junior executives of the State Bank of Carthage were invited to an Indiana Banking Conference at Indiana University Oct 24 25 and 26 sponsored by the Indiana Bankers Association the University and the Indiana Department of Financial Institutions The event will offer courses on current banking issues with University faculty and certificates for three days open to all bank employees and officers Invitations issued by Oscar H Cravens and Robert H Myers
A Sunday at Hannegan church began at 9 30 a m with a lively Sunday school for all ages. The minister preached on Results of Following a Vision. At 2 p m a wedding was conducted and the couple left for their honeymoon. Baptismal services north of the church in Little Blue river followed at 4 p m with candidates baptized. Evening worship closed the day with How Shall We Escape If We Neglect So Great Salvation. Announcement of revival to come.
The ladies of Fletcher M. E. church plan a pie and cake sale starting Saturday at 9 in the electric light office. Proceeds support church activities.
Mrs. Virgil Tetrick and her son Cyril attended the funeral of Granville Jones age 84 in Modoc Indiana on Saturday marking the family gathering and service.
Three hundred thirty six pupils enrolled in Carthage public schools this week, with seventh grade and old elementary totals forming the bulk. The junior high numbers total 71 and senior high 87. The 1938-39 faculty includes nine teachers led by Principal James Allan Reynolds, with new staff adding Latin, mathematics, art, and vocational agriculture. The season opens November 4 at Wilkinson with a tentative schedule and county coaches preparing softball or hardball leagues.
Hoosier Motor Club urges motorists to exercise caution as school openings bring 750000 pupils back to streets. Todd Stoops recalls the first school patrol and AAA safety efforts since 1924, noting 1937 streets fatalities and injuries that can be reduced by careful driving and proper pedestrian rules.
