This Week Captain George E. T. Eyston set a new world automobile speed record posting 345.49 miles per hour on the Bonneville Salt Flats Utah. He ran two measured miles in opposite directions within an hour surpassing his prior land speed record of 311.42 set last November on the same course.
A blast in a crowded Jaffa vegetable market last Thursday afternoon killed at least twenty Arabs and wounded about seventy four. Police blamed Jewish revenge seekers for the bombing, noting the detonation was heard up to ten miles away.
An engineer and a fireman were scalded to death after a steam leak in the water box caused live steam to pour into the cab. They leaped from the train to escape and the locomotive ran three miles then stopped with no crew aboard. The wreckage and deaths were found later by other train crews along the right of way.
Bruno Wendel, a German girl swimmer, landed at Shakespeare Cliff two and a half miles from Dover England Friday morning after swimming the English channel in 15 hours and 3 minutes. She began from the French side near Cap Gris Nez and, after a brief rest, returned to the French border in a boat that accompanied her.
Mrs. Lillie M. Kurfess Floyd county probation officer died after a heart attack following a shock incident at the New Albany court house. The 69 year old was talking with Myrtle Kidd a hitch-hiker from Charlestown West Virginia when a 15 year old girl leaped from a second floor window and the officiant collapsed and died shortly after.
Maj. Alexander P. Sev ersky set a new New York to Los Angeles air speed record in 10 hours 3 minutes 7 seconds surpassing longtime mark held by Capt. Roscoe Turner. The feat marks a major milestone in cross country aviation attempts.

Mrs Bayard Baker and Mrs M S Kyser attended the funeral of Ben Nigh at Morristown on Wednesday afternoon. Mr and Mrs John Jessup and Mr and Mrs Charles Blanken ship attended the funeral of Mrs Sarah Collins at a small church near Scottsburg on Friday.
Republicans hosted a large rally at Homer Capehart’s farm near Washington with about 8,500 precinct committeemen and 25,000 others attending the state’s opening campaign push. The event cost near 25000 and featured James Wadsworth among speakers. Democrats patched a feud between Governor Townsend and Senator Van Nuys at a smaller French Lick Springs rally during the editorial association banquet.
A son, Harold Keith, was born August 19 to Mr. and Mrs. Mc Kinley Muse, south of town.
Miss Betty Williams underwent a tonsil operation Saturday at Henry County hospital in New Castle.
Twenty six Shelby county property owners sue Container Corporation in Shelby circuit court for 37000 damages alleging pollution from the local plant. Plaintiffs include cottage and resort owners claiming their property and recreation use have been ruined and land depreciation ranges from 1000 to 2500 dollars.
Vernon Jackson seven year old son of Mr and Mrs Victor Jackson had his tonsils and adenoids removed in a Thursday operation at Dr Green s hospital Rushville. He is reported to be doing very nicely at this writing.
Mr. and Mrs. Randolph Reams and daughter Lois attended the Capehart rally in Washington Saturday. After the meeting they visited Vincennes and Terre Haute, signaling a domestic extended day trip.
Edward Jackson swept the Rush County 4-H Tomato Show winning blue ribbons in both the peck and plate classes. The event on Saturday August 27 at the county agent’s Rushville office awarded him $3 in cash premiums and 50 cents for a display at a Rushville restaurant. A federal inspector judged thirteen entries, marking Rush county’s first such show. Cash prizes totaling fifteen dollars were donated by area canneries Carthage Knightstown Mays Shirley Ew banks Glenwood Dunreith Waldron Milroy Arlington and Gwynneville.
July realty activity in Rush County rises with sixty plus transactions totaling 41 847.03 dollars. The largest deal covers 175.28 acres in Rushville township sold for 17 703 28 dollars to William Cameron and Ethel Cameron from Ida S Goddard and Noah Goddard et al. The second parcel, 169 acres in Rushville township, sold for 17 500 dollars to Daniel C Green of Cook County Illinois from John S Davis and Lola M Davis. Ripley township transfers include Walnut Ridge Friends Meeting trustees Elmer E Hunt and Harry H Bentley conveying six acres two square rods to Elsie E Chappell Lucille E Chappell et al for 1 250 dollars. Lillian Newsom releases to Phoebe N Newsom covering 79 5 acres in Ripley township and 23 acres in the northwest quarter of section 29 for one dollar and to quiet title. Sixteen more transfers appear within the month.
Mt Pleasant Church in Beech near Carthage held a large homecoming with attendees from New York to Indiana. Alberta Brown of Indianapolis delivered the morning message, and Rev Ed Brown of Indianapolis led the afternoon session. A 92nd birthday mem orial and a reminiscence service at Market Street, plus a long list of out of town hosts, marked the day.
A historic Beech grove meeting house near Charlottesville preserves a century of Black worship and memory. Ninety one year old Barney Stone, Civil War veteran and state chaplain, recalls Lincoln and the fight for equality, linking the Beeches to generations across the nation.
Rush County plans another display at the Indiana State Fair this year. The county exhibit, winner of first place last year, will promote home produced lard with a presentation on How and Why We Use Lard. The display proclaims Rush County produces 2,580,000 pounds of pure snow white lard annually. Seven other displays will be shown from Madison, Ange, Vigo and Hendricks counties.
