This week Maria Rasputin Saloviff daughter of Rasputin and circus wild animal trainer was ordered to depart the United States for Russia. Her permit expired in April and could not be renewed leaving her no longer able to remain in the country.
A large Italian passenger seaplane crashed from 2,500 feet into Mount Maramola burning on impact. Nineteen people died Sunday among them Miss Helen Lindheim of New York, an American social figure, and Albania’s minister to Rome.
Governor Philip F. LaFollette urged progressives and independents to Wisconsin to launch a new political party. The nascent National Progressives of America adopts a blue flag emblem with a central circle and a ballot cross.
Tragic incident ends in Williams area when 32 year old Lester Etchinson of Bedford Indiana drives his car into a deep hole in the White River causing the deaths of himself and his three sons.
Four long term robbery convicts escaped Indiana State Prison Tuesday afternoon in a box-car escape and reached Mahomet Illinois before capture. The escape began when they hid in a freight car inside the prison and were pulled to safety as the car left. They then hijacked a nearby automobile and fled about forty minutes before officials learned of the departure.

Sigma Chapter of Kappa Kappa Sigma held its third anniversary May 4 with a dinner at Whispering Winds near Indianapolis. The group, organized May 4, 1935 with ten members, now has twenty-one active members and raises funds through two annual dances to support milk for public schools, library gifts, Red Cross, Girl Scout projects, Christmas seals, and clothing drives for township families.
Rush county records show 29 births and 20 deaths for March. Townships list 22 births and 12 deaths. Rushville city reports 9 births and 8 deaths. Names include Ripley Donna Jean Ewing and Center Paul Edward Snedigar among others.

Southern Methodists voted overwhelmingly on Saturday to form a single United Methodist Church with the Northern and other branches, despite warnings of secession from deep South opponents of affiliation. The move unites the denomination into one church.
The Sixth District Medical Society annual meeting will be held today May 5 at the Richmond Leland Hotel in Richmond Indiana. The program includes demonstrations moving pictures on normal delivery and breech presentation by G W Gustafson M D, a banquet with Dr Patrick Weeks, and sessions on newborn care obstetric hemorrhage and neonatal topics. Dr J L Allen of Greenfield is president and Dr Frank H Green of Rushville secretary.
Mr. and Mrs. James Whitfield observed their golden wedding anniversary with a family dinner at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Whitfield. The couple were married fifty years ago last Saturday as relatives and friends including Clarence, Henry, John, Leo Whitfield and their families, Felix and Edward Sanders, Kenneth Ray, and Howard Zimmerman attended.
Glenn Cain of Indianapolis, described as a nephew of Mrs. Sarah Robinson and Mrs. Anna Platt, sustained injuries in a recent accident while driving a commercial vehicle from a business center. He remains hospitalized under care as doctors assess his condition.
About 248 attendees gathered for the Morristown High School Alumni Association twenty eighth banquet at the school gym. Fred V. Cramer acted as toastmaster. William Patterson of Meeckstown was guest of honor. New officers elected: Blanche Cole president Billy Layden vice president Riley Keaton secretary treasurer.
Former Walnut Ridge resident John T. Chappell of John Brown university Siloam Arkansas visited Wednesday and Thursday with Charles S. Winslow. He spent winter with his sister Leora C. Orvis in New Rochelle New York and reports his father J Thomas Chappell is in very good health there.
The Container Corporation of America donated a book to the Henry Henley Public Library titled Paper Wasps and Packages. It traces paper making from its beginnings to modern paper board production and adds a brief romantic history of the art.
Mrs David Ray remains quite ill at her home on North Market street. Mrs Nora Miller remains in a very serious condition.

A two color six cent air mail stamp will be issued by the U S Post Office for National Air Mail Week May 15 to 21. The blue border and red emblem show an eagle with shield olive wreath and arrows. Stamps go on sale May 14 in Dayton Ohio and St Petersburg Florida with nationwide sales the following days. Special flights by privately owned planes May 19 will showcase rapid air mail service and aid network expansion.
The Carthage Service club and Rushville Kiwanis plan a joint meeting next Tuesday night May 10 at 6 30 in the Odd Fellows Temple Rushville. Dusty Miller of Wilmington Ohio a newspaper publisher entertainer and philosopher will be the speaker. A large number have signified intent to attend the program is arranged and members are urged to attend.
Container Corporation of America has operated continuously for two weeks, employing several men. The straw ricking branch is busy with large semi-trailers visiting from distant points, echoing the 1930s era of high straw output in the Northwest. The plant supports many workers on bailers, trucks, and yard operations, stimulating related industries through increased gasoline, food, tires, and accessories demand.
In Ripley township Rush County Indiana voters chose James Terhune over Lawrence Price and Byron D Ball. Lonnie Orme defeated three rivals for sheriff as Republican turnout stayed light and Democrats saw limited contest. Fireworks noted countywide with hot races and final tallies for all precincts.
The Furnas Ice Cream Company Indianapolis unit of the Borden Associated Companies bought 371,013 pounds of milk from 76 Rush County farms in the first quarter of 1938 at a cost of 8,795 dollars. Purchases rose from 322,609 pounds costing 7,734 dollars in the same period a year earlier. Milk was bought through the Morristown receiving plant.
