Harry Wardmen 45 died in Washington D C Friday night. A noted hotel and real estate magnate his holdings were tallied around 30 million dollars. Wardmen arrived in America by mistaken voyage while aiming for Australia and ended up in the United States.
After days of escalating tension Poland and Lithuania called off war dogs and accepted Poland’s demands. Communications between the two nations resumed, averting a major regional crisis and preserving peacetime efforts among European statesmen.
The March warm spell peaked on Tuesday with a 2:30 p.m. reading of 79.7 degrees, the hottest since 1907. Temperatures climbed through Saturday then dropped with rain resembling April showers Tuesday night and Wednesday.

James C. Cooper Rushville attorney campaigns in Ripley township for the May primary. He is 35, married, lives on 9th street, and partners with William J. Henley Sr. of Carthage. Cooper was admitted to supreme and federal bars in 1927 and has since practiced law, serving as Rush County Bar Association secretary treasurer and special mayor’s court judge, and holds membership in local Masons Elks and Red Men lodges.
About two hundred people gathered at Westland high school last Friday to honor the basketball team and Coach Harold Hardin. A freshmen versus sophomores game opened the event, followed by a pitch-in supper at 7 30. Robert Willis received an award for most foul shots. Rev. Harvey Sewell of Cincinnati spoke on township schools with athletic relevance and encouragement for the players.
The Rushville area reports February births up and deaths down for the third straight month. Twenty three deaths statewide, 19 in the county. four deaths and four births in Rushville city. Contagious diseases rise due to weather with measles and scarlet fever totaling 23 and 13 cases respectively. Miss Juanita Winfield, a Carthage High School junior, won the title of Miss Carthage High School after receiving over 2,000 ballots in a Friday gymnasium event linked to Cafe Manicura. Bertha Mae Stephens placed second as seniors plan a trip to Washington, D.C.
The Dr. F. M. Miller property on North Main Street, occupied by Ernest Bradford and Lawrence McDaniel, has been sold to Parvil Moore, a manager at Carthage Sawmill. Moore plans to exchange houses with the Iford and Bradiford families soon.
Cynthia J. Nigh aged eighty eight widow of Emmons Nigh died Sunday at 8:45 a m at her Morristown home. Funeral services were held Tuesday at 2:00 p m at the family residence with Rev W H Nutter officiating. Burial in Hanover cemetery under L W Hauk. Born in Illinois June 17 1849 she was a long time Morristown resident and active Christian church member. Survivors include daughter Mrs Burton Wayman and four sons Frank Chester Everett and Jesse nine grandchildren and four great grandchildren.
The Woman's Republican club schedules a covered dish luncheon at 1 PM next Wednesday in the court house assembly room at Rushville. A very interesting program will follow the luncheon and Ripley township women are invited to attend.
Mrs. Mattie B Publow, trustee of Ripley township for two years, filed with the county clerk seeking Republican nomination in the May primary. Appointed May 1936 to fill her late husband J Russell Publow's unexpired term, she is praised as a capable leader.
The Ambassador Quartet from Asbury College Wilmore Kentucky will perform at Feltcher M E Church on Friday night April first Rev Robt H Myers announces The group led by Boyd E Macrory an instructor at the college toured the world last year and plans to bring several film reels from their trip Their pictures will appear in the Carthage Citizen next week Further details will be announced then
February realty report by county recorder Anna Downey shows 48 transfers totaling 56683 with 30 listed as one dollar and other considerations. In Ripley township Effie McClarnon Virgil McClarnon Orval Narvell Deloma Narvell convey land to Russell Narvell for one dollar. Oliver Drysdale conveys Lot 75 in Henley and Clarks addition to Carthage for 500 dollars. DeSchipper Packing Co conveys 5344 acres in Ripley township to Russell C Nigh and Mildred O Nigh as joint tenants for 4012.50 dollars.
Mr and Mrs Walter J Phelps returned to their home Sunday afternoon from California where they spent the winter months.
Kenneth Rhodes outlines the 1938 Agricultural Adjustment Act. It extends soil conservation, sets five crop programs cotton wheat corn tobacco and rice, and uses loans quotas and acreage allotments to stabilize supplies for domestic use and export. The plan includes crop insurance for wheat, new payments for maintaining soil conserving practices, and incentives to keep acreage within allotted limits.
Morton High student William Bruce won first place in the county oratorical contest held at Morton school with the speech Youth Aflame by Irene Holth. The victory marks Morton’s fifth straight first place as Joseph Archer of Raleigh took second and Julia Carr of New Salem third.
The third annual officers and directors luncheon of the Home Economics club was held at M. E. church Rushville on Tuesday March 22. The program included luncheon music violin solo and talks on home economics topics with ninety women present. Attendees from Carthage included Mrs Mattie Publow Mrs Edgar Ruby and others.
Orlando F. Ingle announces candidacy for re election as Rush County Prosecutor in the May Republican primary. He praises his two year record of order and integrity, notes DePauw University graduate status, and details earlier teaching and law career in Rushville. He lives at 734 North Morgant Street with his wife and son.
