Detroit educator Miss Josephine Brownson receives the 1939 Laetare Medal from the University of Notre Dame. She is the first descendant of a former medalist to be honored since the award began in 1883. her father, the late Henry Brownson, was the 1892 medalist.

Knightstown Wife Gains National Attention For Mustache Cup Hobby

Mrs Walter Jolly of Knightstown has built a nationwide reputation with an antique mustache cup collection. She earned a trip to New York to appear on Hobby Lobby on Wednesday nights, though her scheduled March 15 appearance was postponed. Her eight year collection spans England France Japan Canada Germany Austria and the United States with over 800 cups. The hobby recalls the late 1800s fashion era and features varied sizes shapes and inscriptions. Dave Elman helped arrange the Hobby Lobby exposure.

Charles Alexander of Morton Memorial won the 1939 Rush County oratorical contest at Fletcher Methodist church. Rosalie Humes placed second, stirring debate over the judge’s decision. The event marked Morton’s third straight year winning the rotating plaque and sixth consecutive county title.

Henry Troy Kinder Dies at 40 in Carthage

Funeral services for Henry Troy Kinder 40 held at his home with Rev. C L Shaw and Rev Murray S Kenworthy. He died Monday night after illness from influenza and pneumonia. Born Sept 13 1899 in Cape County Missouri he came to Carthage three years ago. Widow and three daughters survive. body to Palestine Illinois for burial.

Arlington Woman Escapes Accident After Semi Collision

Mrs. Marjorie Ging of Arlington, REMO office employee in Rushville, escaped serious injury when a semitrailer driven by Joseph Catanzaro of Cincinnati toppled onto her car on West Third Street. The truck, owned by L G Davis Co of Chicago, swerved during a misread hand signal as she prepared to turn onto Spencer Street. Ging was fined $1 plus costs in Rushville Municipal Court for failure to give a proper hand signal.
