This week Indiana basketball activity reduced 723 teams to 64 sectional champions as the state championship race advances. Notable results showed few upsets with New Castle Logansport Connersville Huntingburg Jeffersonville and Brazil among teams affected.
A 12 man jury in Steubenville Ohio awarded Cora Lillian Burnham a divorced woman ten thousand dollars for the loss of the affections of Rev. Harold C Zeis Episcopal rector in a ligated suit heard in the superior court Saturday afternoon.
A Negro burglar wearing a midnight blue tuxedo suit was shot by William S. Eads, a 64 year old grocer on Indianapolis east side, early Sunday. Mrs Eads woke to someone moving near the shop and the husband fired as the man tried to flee.
A major fire at the Hotel New Yorker forced residents honeymooners visitors and guests to flee early Monday. The flames, fed by grease-soaked vents, raced upward through the ventilation shaft and spread rapidly through the large hotel.
The Indiana State Alcoholic Beverages Commission approved resolutions as a peace move in the interstate beer dispute with Michigan officials. The uncivil exchanges over beer imports from each other's breweries have unsettled manufacturers. the aim is a settlement without loss to any producer.

Bennett R. Webb aged 84 of Carthage died at 12 30 a m Tuesday March 8 at his son's home from a stroke after a week long illness. He was born November 15 1853 in Shelby county and moved to Carthage 41 years ago to run straw wagons for the straw board mill. He married Nancy Sullivan August 13 1874. she died January 1936. Surviving are two sons Everett and Frank of Carthage two daughters Cora Bishop Rushville Mrs Isaac Earnest and Mrs Charles VanScyce Morristown and Avery Webb Butlerville a brother James Webb near Center two sisters Mrs Martha Scott near Center and Mrs Sarah Mohler Raleigh and several grandchildren. He belonged to the United Brethren church at Gwynneville. Funeral services were held Thursday at 1 15 p m at the house and 2 p m at the United Brethren church Gwynneville with Rev Roy Laswell officiating. Burial was in Hanover Cemetery near Morristown.
The senior class of Carthage High announces a market this Saturday afternoon March 12 at Winfield's grocery starting at 1 o'clock. Cakes pies cookies and more will be on sale to raise funds for a sight seeing trip to Washington D C.

Two Cambridge City visitors Virginia Ball and Norman Myers collided at a street corner in New Castle while in town for a wreck. The unusual incident involved both drivers driving to New Castle to have a wreck and meeting by chance.

Miss Mary Eleanor Cox daughter of Mr and Mrs Thomas J Cox of Greenfield and Kenneth D Bash son of Mr and Mrs Charles E Bash wed Sunday at 430 PM in the M P parsonage with Rev Farrow presiding. The bride wore blue crepe with black accessories and carried talisman roses. After the ceremony the party drove to Morristown for a Kopper Kettle dinner and the couple settled in a newly furnished home on North Main Street Carthage.
Rushville hosts a Tenth District Joint Meeting on Tuesday March 15 to celebrate the American Legion’s 19th birthday. Posts from the district are invited with reservations via post commanders and a 3 20 dinner followed by dancing and a floor show. A membership round up will close the meeting as Rush Post 150 and Auxiliary organize the event with a 75 cent registration.
Indiana's 700 plus local conservation clubs prepare to observe National Conservation Week the week of March 2026 in conjunction with National Wildlife Restoration Week. President Roosevelt designated the event, with Virgil M. Simmons, Indiana Department of Conservation commissioner, announcing plans for public meetings and programs to highlight conservation needs and reduce abuse of natural resources. This marks Indiana's fourth year in the national program.
L. M. Hasseld of the Sherwin Williams Paint Company expert on painting problems will be at the Carthage Radio and Appliance Shop for day and evening demonstrations on Saturday March 12. He will answer questions about painting and discuss any concerns. Special music by Phillip Guest, accordion and guitar soloist, formerly with WLS and WLBC, will entertain attendees.

Juries for the new term of court were drawn at the courthouse by the jury commissioners. The grand jury lists twelve names and the petit jury twenty four, with new names to be drawn from the remaining list. The lines list both grand and petite jurors with their home towns and counties.
Rushville Roarin Lions defeated the Morton Tigers 27 to 19 in the sectional final, earning a regional berth at Rushville. Carthage Blue Raiders fell 39 to 27 to Morton in the semifinal, sending six seniors off the team.
Mr. and Mrs. Walter Phelps left California last Monday to visit relatives along the way home. They will see Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Walters in Sanger, then travel to San Francisco and finally stay in Arvada Colorado with Mr. and Mrs. Nevill Phelps and family.
Mrs. Arthur Rogers shows improvement after cataract surgery on both eyes and is at home northeast of Carthage. Mrs. Roscoe Brown and Mrs. Elizabeth Walker are improving from illness. Norma Jean McCorkle, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Howard McCorkle, has measles. Several others including Mrs. Walter Bitner, Mrs. Ralph Winslow and her son, Mrs. Susie Addison, Dr. Robert Spangler, and William Smith are recovering at home from illness.
Mrs. Victor V. Vincent died Monday morning at her Valley Mills home. She and her husband had recently resided in Carthage. She was mother to William Smock Don Vincent and Frances Gilbert.
Anna F Downey, born in Rush county and longtime resident, announces her candidacy for County Recorder. Widow and mother of six, she has served as Recorder for three years and attends the Christian church at Arlington. Two of her children remain in school.
