Mr and Mrs Roy Turner and their son Paul returned home last week after a ten day trip with Russell Turner and family in Olathe Kansas. the outing concluded without incident and the family resumes normal routines.
Philip W. Doughty aged 22 of Carthage and Milanie Ann Taylor aged 20 of Greenfield filed a marriage license application at Greenfield. The two plan to wed as records show.
Mr. and Mrs. Elva Logan of Grassy Kentucky and Mrs. Ted Nolan of Bucyrus Ohio visited Carthage residents Otis Logan Kinley Mahan and Virgil Nolan and their families during the past week.
Pfc. Michael C. Ruby with RA 16634066 has returned to Fort Bragg North Carolina after a thirty day furlough spent with family in Carthage. Address for contact is listed at the Personnel Section Headquarters Battery 82nd Airborne Division Artillery.
The Lloyd Manuel family reports a motor trip to California with stops at the Ozarks Painted Desert Petrified Forest and Grand Canyon. They crossed the desert at night to avoid daytime heat and expect to return home in about two weeks.
Sgt and Mrs R E Gard and their two sons left Wednesday to live at Fort Sill Oklahoma. They had been visiting several weeks with her mother Mrs Carrie Bramel and other relatives.
Bernita Logan and eleven church members from Greenfield Church of God travel to the Assembly of God Church Camp in Cambridge City this week. Rev. and Mrs. R. B. Thomas of Greenfield also attend.
Mrs Mary Joseph Mrs Norma McKain and Mrs Katherine Ellis attended the Gift Show at the Claypool Hotel in Indianapolis Tuesday evening.
Sgt. Curtis A. Lewman arrived by plane Saturday July 23 from 13 months in Korea and is on furlough with wife Virginia Sandefur Lewman and daughter Carol.
Reverend and Mrs. Lewis H. May returned from a week of touring Ohio and Michigan. They visited relatives in Galion Buchanan and Niles and recalled earlier assignments including St. Marys Ohio and Rollin Friends Church near Addison Michigan where the Mays began their ministry thirty one years ago.
Linda Wells and Janice Todd travel with families to Quaker Haven Church Camp at Syracuse Indiana and Dewart Lake this week for youth program activities.
Notice announces Dr Wendell Hansen of Anderson bringing trained Bible birds to speak on evangelism Friday August 5 at 7 30 p m in the Community Center basement sponsored by Walnut Ridge Missionary Society. All are welcome with a carry in supper at 6:00 p.m.
The Carthage American Legion Auxiliary hosted a birthday supper at the Community Center on Saturday night with a cooperative meal. An evening of bingo and a cake walk followed, and Carl Edwards received the Auxiliary's crochet Afghan from the recent project. Past Auxiliary presidents organized the party.
Bearl Miller 77 lifelong Rush County resident and farmer died about noon Friday in Henry County Hospital New Castle after a week as a patient. He lived two miles southwest of Carthage born Posey Township January 3 1883 son of Joseph A and Mary Davis Miller. Wife Maude Miller died January 1958. Survived by nephew Ross M Hutchinson of Cambridge City and several cousins. A brother and sister preceded him in death. Member of Hannegan Christian Church. Services 2 p.m. Monday Hampton Mortuary Carthage with Rev. Robert Kendall officiating burial in East Hill Cemetery Arlington.
Carthage Jr Hi and 5th-6th grade squads swept Manilla in a doubleheader. The 5th-6th won 8-2 as Steve Ellis and Phillip Crisswell pitched well. Moefields hit a bases loaded homer in the final inning. Jr Hi won 7-5 aided by 11 walks and three-hit game by Carthage. Carthage High School teams won two games behind strong pitching, including Bill Muir’s no-hitter in a 5-1 win over New Salem and an 8-3 win over Milroy. The Midget League featured a 13-3 Yanks win over Rockets with Steve McClurg pitching. McClurg, Mike McClurg, John Rucker, and Ronnie Howard all had multiple hits.
Carthage junior high opened at Knightstown with an 81 victory. Pitcher Clifford Aker held opponents to three hits while Larry Jordan hit two long triples to lead the Raiders. Other Carthage hitters included Paul Love Steve Marshall Kit Porter Gene Rucker Patterson and John with singles.
Charles Mosier and daughters Sue and Judy Kennedy attended Sunday services at First Baptist Church in Dayton Ohio where Rev James King delivered the sermon. King recently returned from a six weeks tour abroad of Palestine and Jerusalem and shared Dayton points of interest after dinner.
The Chi Rho group met Monday evening July 25 with 8 members and 2 teachers. Pledges and prayers were given, songs led by Larry Bush and Jerry May, and members Arlene Ruby Sherry McKain and Karen Siler shared Chi Rho Camp activities.
House guests last week included Mrs Raymond Arnett and children Eddie Esther and Sally of Merom Indiana with Robert and Sharon Arnett of Merom as weekend visitors.

Purdue University reports 3174 entering freshmen enrolled in the advance plan from June 20 to July 15, with about 80 percent participation. Orientation begins Sept 11, delayed registration Sept 7 for late arrivals. Nine Rush County students joined the plan with hometowns and fields listed.
Lafayette announces the 30th Indiana Gladiolus Society and Wabash Gladiolus Festival with 500 exhibits on Aug 4 7 in Wabash. A gladiolus queen will be crowned Aug 6 at Honeywell Memorial Center. Awards include the perpetual Indiana Gladiolus Society trophy and the C E Troyer trophy.
Mrs. Marjorie Davis and children Gary Derrel and Debbie of Los Angeles along with Mrs. Char lene Smith and her daughter from Washington DC departed Friday from the Winters home after a two weeks visit. The group attended family reunions and visited Richmond Lynn and Economy Indiana during their stay.
Mr and Mrs John Cass of Cumberland visited Cum berland kin while Dickie Craig of Indianapolis stays with his grandparents Mr and Mrs Leonard Sullivan Sr. Craig family relations and community scenes sum up a Sunday in Rush County with guests at the swimming pool.
On Monday morning July 25 1960 the Carthage Mill of Container Corporation of America completed 365 days without a lost time accident. A white Safety Flag bearing the Green Cross for Safety emblem was raised in front of the mill office to commemorate the achievement and will fly daily while the record remains perfect.
John DeSchipper a former Carthage resident died after a two month illness at Ball Memorial Hospital in Muncie He had owned and operated local canning interests including Westwood Canning Co and a Spiceland processing plant He was 16 when he came to the United States and was a member of several fraternal and church groups He survived by three daughters a son and seven grandchildren.
Mr and Mrs Roscoe Davis returned last Thursday from a short trip to the Smoky Mountains They visited well known horse farms in the Blue Grass region near Lexington Norris Dam and Coves Lake State Park Spelman Memorial on the Appalachian Divide the pioneer farm on the Oconaluftee Trail near Cherokee and toured the Blue Ridge Parkway through the Smokies and mountains in North Carolina and Virginia
Indiana July 1 cattle on feed totaled 133 000, 26 percent below a year earlier. Three months or longer accounted for 100 000, 75 percent of the total. April-June placements were 34 000, far below 1959. Marketings in April-June reached 83 000, with 100 000 projected for next three months. July, August and September shares set at 28, 36 and 36 percent.

Postmaster J. M. Coffin reports federal approval for a new Arlington post office across the street from the current building. Construction starts immediately under a five year lease with Lowell D. Nelson, adding 960 square feet, loading platform and parking with modern lighting and an open service counter.
Mr and Mrs Mike Watkins and son Mike visit Billy and Mrs Watkins near Nashville Indiana from Wednesday through Sunday. Radio and Appliance reports Sunday guests including Willard Robinson and family of Anderson plus Faye Castner of Greensburg and others from Versailles Indianapolis and Osgood. John Stanley of Knightstown takes a Purina Company position. Friday dinner guests include Harold Mitchell family Sparta Michigan and Knightstown friends. Robert Walker visits Jesse Ruby at Centerville and Ed Ruby returns home after a short stay.
Miss Priscilla Offutt from Rush County National Bank awarded annual 4H Home Economics trophies Monday evening. Winners include Sheilah Talbert Clothing, Nancy Norris Crafts, Becky White Home Improvement, Linda Harrold Food Preservation Canning, Harriett Kuhn Freezing, and Marlene Wagoner Foods.
Rush County taxed value drops from 47.4 to 45.66 million, driven by lower rural animal and state board assessments. Carthage and Rushville show gains, with Rushville City up 135,635 to 9,046,735 and Carthage up 81,195 to 1,281,055. Noble Township leads rural declines with 230,400 drop.
Officers and committee chairs met with Purdue specialist Noah Hadley to outline plans for the year. Activities include an agricultural outlook in September, continued farm record project, district policy meeting in January, Swine Economics and grain handling Extension School, a farm management tour with Hancock county, and financing farm operations. A new Better Farming and Better Living course for younger couples will be offered district wide with Shelby and Fayette counties co operating, seven detailed meetings planned.
On Cecil Hartman farm in Jackson township eight oat varieties were harvested Saturday. Good field led with 125 pounds and test weight 34. Putnam produced 119 pounds with 33 test weight. Clintland 60 yielded 114.5 pounds and Newton 108 pounds. all high moisture. Purdue will calculate yields in bushels per acre and release soon.
Miss Judy Kennedy stayed Sunday to Tuesday with Rev. and Mrs. Dean McCoy and daughter in Indianapolis. Mr and Mrs Sharon Hunt and family and Mrs Elmer Hunt visited Stephen Hunt in Lafayette Indiana on Sunday.
The Carthage High School Band invites the public to a shirt sleeve concert near the main square Saturday evening. About fifty musicians will perform favorites from eight to nine, sponsored by the Better Business Association. The band also eyes Shelbyville on Aug 6 and state fair events in September.
Tennessee Ernie Ford plans a four appearance run at the Indiana State Fair with a Capitol album recording session in the Coliseum. The show features Anita Bryant the Vagabonds and Professor Backwards with an estimated 48 000 in attendance. Past hits include Sixteen Tons and Old Era backed by notable performers. Greenfield social note mentions Roy Stanley family visiting.
Mrs Lestie Heifner visited Sun day with Mrs Hallie Webster south of Arlington. Betsy Stoten of West Lafayette was a weekend guest of her father Donald Stoten Jr. Mr and Mrs Richard Harrold and daughters were in Cincinnati on a buying trip. Mrs Larry Apple and daughter of Cicero Indiana visited with the Stapps and daughter. Mr and Mrs George Chance of Indianapolis and Mr and Mrs Cleve Geise were Friday night guests of the Geises.
