Residents report a Monday wind and hail storm causing shattered windows and crop loss in the Carthage area. The bulletin lists local residents’ updates, military service notices, road and bridge projects, new deputies, subscription refreshes, AAA checks, and planned aluminum drives as the community notes events and preparations for summer.
County commissioners at their regular meeting voted to raise road employees pay by five cents an hour to 40 cents. They cited rising living costs and ordered no parking signs at Arlington where Carthages Arlington Road meets Road 52 to improve visibility at the state road. A petition from Alice Conrad and others to asphalt from the Ripley township line to U S 62 was placed on file for potential future action.
Indianapolis July 10. Navy Department opens the U S Naval Reserve to general enlistment and allows men registered under the Selective Service law to volunteer for four years. Lt. Comdr. D McWhorter and Lt. Comdr. S A Bishop announced. Vocational and college routes include V-7 and V-5 programs with commissions upon graduation. Local boards are to refer volunteers to nearest Navy Recruiting office.
Thomas Murfin of Rushville was severely burned Thursday morning while working on an R. E. M. C. project south of Carthage. A live wire energized a heavy rope, knocking him unconscious and causing burns to his head before rescuers lowered him from the pole.
The Dies committee shows evidence of Nazi influence in Latin America addressed to the Argentine congress. Robert Stripling, Dies committee secretary, presents a pouch containing the materials as the panel reviews the disclosure.
Governor Schricker calls on Indiana mayors and town board presidents to lead urban aluminum collection while county agricultural agents direct rural areas. The statewide drive runs July 21 to 30 with central collection points and coordinated Civil Defense effort led by Frank G. Thompson of Bluffton.
Rev. Murray S. Kenworthy led a group of young people to Quaker Haven on Sunday afternoon for a week long conference. He delivered two lectures daily. Attendees included Judith Henley Lois White Jimmie Carr and Jack Porter.
Melvin J. Steffey, a former Carthage resident, died suddenly at his niece's home in Indianapolis. The body was moved to Wilson Funeral Home in Knightstown for services at 2 30 p m Sunday and burial at Glen Cove Cemetery. Attendees from the area included Roy Herkless Clyde Henley Weldon Newlin Walter Newlin Lon McCorkle Jack Mattix and Landon Frost.
Carl Masters and Charles Debord were fined after a Tuesday drive ended at a telephone pole. Masters paid ten dollars on two counts for driving while intoxicated and without a license, while Debord was fined five dollars plus costs totaling twelve dollars and ninety cents. failure to pay led to jail.
The Henry County Women’s Republican Club hosts its annual family picnic with Wayne township club members as hostesses on Monday July 14 at 6 pm at the Shelter House Sunset Park Knights Town. Community singing novelty dances and special music are planned. Robert Loring of Indianapolis national committeeman Young Republicans of Indiana will be principal speaker. Open to the public. Bring baskets and table service.
Billy Gatewood son of Mr and Mrs William Gatewood broke his right leg below the knee Sunday while playing at a relative's home in Greencastle. Father and mother named. The injury occurred at the relative's residence.
Mr and Mrs Roy Herkless will leave next Monday July 14 for a month long stay in Luddington Michigan.
A northwest storm hit Carthage and surrounding county areas Monday evening with high winds and hail. Homes, barns, and crops were damaged, several windows shattered, and power and street lights out. Edward D Retherford, 83, was killed when his car was struck by a southbound freight train at Tweedyville road crossing. Funeral plans remained unsettled at press time.
Mr and Mrs Ray Gurley and Mr and Mrs H T Beher will leave Monday for Phelps Wisconsin for a two weeks stay. Mr and Mrs Ross Tweedy and Mr and Mrs Thomas Bush will join them a few days later.
Arch N. Bobbitt asserts Indiana’s 1941 Republican general assembly laws were constitutional and properly enacted. He notes Supreme Court history and party practice since 1852, contending opposition boasted of court control. He argues Governor’s compromise would leave Republicans unable to govern and would place laws with Democrats. (Continued on page sf)
