Back to Coast Guard School After Holiday
Jim Carr son of Mr and Mrs A J Carr returned to Coast Guard Prep School Groton Connecticut after ten days at Carthage. He plans to finish in May and take the Coast Guard Academy exam. His parents drove him to Richmond for the all night train to New York City and then to Groton arriving by midday.

Soldier Son Sherman Nevels Returns to Minnesota
Mrs Emma Penticuff learns her son Pfc Sherman Nevels has landed in the States and is snow bound in Minnesota. He served three years overseas two and a half in combat with a Marine searchlight unit, taking part in Guam Saipan and other South Pacific invasions. His mother, a local restaurant proprietor, awaits his homecoming.

Woman suffers severe burns in gas oven blast
Mrs Russell Parish burned severely on her face after gas buildup in a stove oven exploded as she tried to light the burner. Her daughter Jackie received a minor burn on the arm.

Death of Edgar N Hill Ends Ripley Civic Leader Career
Edgar N Hill aged 84 died Monday at 1 30 am at his sister’s home in Knightstown after months of ill health. Born July 15 1861 in Carthage he helped bring the railroad to Carthage 1890s and locate a paper mill there in 1891. He served as first general manager of the mill until 1914 and later engaged in timber mining and hardware ventures. Cremation followed funeral services led by Rev DeWitt Foster. He left a sister Bertha Hill and brother Walter Hill.

In a Christmas return game the Independent teams of Carthage and Arlington met on local hardwood.
