Mrs. DeSchipper reports the DeSchipper Canning plant packed upwards of 50,000 cases of No 10 and No 214 cans of tomatoes and juice. The plant paid about $45,000 for seasonal help and growers received $43,000. She estimates roughly 25 percent of the crop lost to late September rains, with yields averaging six and three tenths tons per acre and some growers reaching about 14 tons. A new, modernized unit is in operation as expansion plans aim for a longer season and more diverse canning.
Unabating snow blanketed Carthage with about eight inches marking a rare white Christmas since the war began. Ripley service members return home from battle as the storm continues through Tuesday night adding three and a half inches and bringing arctics and shovels into use.

The annual Lions and Choral Club Minstrels drew a large Ripley audience on December 13 despite sickness reducing sales. Willie the Traveler recovered from a mishap with a painted message and the show featured young performers led by Mrs. Alta Carr. The event strengthens Ripley entertainment traditions with plans to improve next year. The Sacred Concert at East Street Christian Church Sunday night, featuring Miss Padock and Mrs. Robert Spangler, drew attendees with Miss Charlotte Moore on piano and A J Carr directing.
Mrs Maurice Brooks and her young son returned from St Johns hospital in Anderson on Monday and are staying at the home of Mr and Mrs John Brooks. Miss Julia Murdrock at Methodist hospital Indianapolis shows slight improvement. Mrs Donna Jackson back at Robert Long hospital Indianapolis for further treatment. Walter Mann remains in Methodist hospital with room change to B-14 and enjoys hearing from friends.
Malcolm McClarnon and Billy Norris were discharged from Great Lakes in recent weeks and are at home in Knights and Carthage respectively. Junior B. Gulley Src. was discharged at the Separation Center in Great Lakes on December 12. Clyde Johnson was honorably discharged from the Army at Fort Leonard Wood on December 4 and is now home in Carthage.

William Frost who sold his Carthage restaurant has purchased Gracie's cafe in Knightstown and took over last Friday. He plans to move from Carthage to Knightstown in the spring after five years in local catering.
Sixty six Lions members, spouses, and guests gathered for the annual Family Night and Christmas party last Monday. The evening featured games and singing after a turkey dinner, with Rev. DeWitt Foster delivering a brief talk on Christmas meaning. Humorist Harry McClain from Shelbyville entertained and accepted a club invitation. President Hugh Weber announced a director’s meeting for December 26 at Tommy Bush’s garage.
Stanley Williams of the Original Tractor Cab plant in Arlington says reconversion plans depended on steel. He forecasts 400 cabs daily and 250 to 300 employees if materials arrive, versus 100 currently. November and December yielded 2,500 cabs planned but only 400 produced amid scarce steel and limited supplies.
Harry O Pitts received a message of the death of his brother Rufus Pitts of Pomona California on Sunday. Immediate survivors include a daughter Mrs Charles Pettis with whom he made his home a sister Mrs Alice Bundy of near Greenfield and a brother Mr Pitts of this place. Mrs Pitts a sister of Mrs John Julian of this place preceded him in death several years ago. Burial followed at Pomona.

The Raiders defeated the Westland Bears 39 to 28 on their home floor last Wednesday night. The Bears started strong, but the Raiders answered with effective defense and offense to secure the win before a large crowd. The county season’s best game claim was voiced by several spectators.
Mr and Mrs James E Mosier were weekend guests of Mr and Mrs Charles Mosier and family. Mr Mosier who has been overseas for a number of months has received his discharge.
The Ripley Farm Bureau met in the Community Building with about 35 members present for a Christmas party and regular business session. New officers were installed led by Cecil Pike as president and Edgar Ruby as president after nine years, with prizes awarded in corn and bean exhibits and a social hour featuring Santa Claus and contests.
Soprano Eileen Farrell presents I Know That My Redeemer Liveth from Handel's Messiah on CBS Friday December 21. Bernard Herrmann conducts the Columbia Concert Orchestra with other pieces including The Holy Child and So How a Rose Ever Blooming. Roy Acuff headlines Grand Ole Opry Saturday December 22 with My Little Home in Tennessee and Drifting Too Far from the Shore, plus Old Hickory Singers perform Jingle Bells and Silent Night.
Nearly all business and service will pause for Christmas in Carthage. The post office will operate 8:00–9:00 a.m. and 3:30–6:00 p.m. Ely's drug store opens briefly in the morning for urgent needs. Service stations will be open part of the morning. Mr and Mrs Harry O Pitts plan to spend the winter in Ft Lauderdale Florida.
Mr and Mrs Harry Chambers of Indianapolis were Friday evening supper guests of Mr and Mrs Sam Gold and family.
