Mrs Louise Botts of Brazil seeks 50000 in a court suit this week alleging humiliation and disgrace caused by defendants she accuses of wrongdoing in connection with her 13 month stay in the Woman s Prison for forgeries she did not commit.
A Sunday night fire at the National Hybrid Seed company plant in Iowa City caused an estimated $350,000 in losses. The blaze, believed to be started by an overheated stove, struck as the company had previously bought seed corn in Rush county and in 1935 purchased substantial corn in the area.
Col Charles A. Lindbergh, back in the United States, supports Pan American Airways plan to buy several 100 passenger airplanes for trans oceanic service carrying mail freight and passengers.
Jack March from Carlisle Pennsylvania returned to jail and received a 50 day sentence after defying school vaccination orders for his seven year old son Eugene. He kept the boy out of school to protest vaccinating him.
US warship Panay was bombed by Japanese aircraft on the Yangtze River. Fifty four survived and were brought ashore, 91 missing. six hundred boarded a rescue ship that aided the vessel. President Hoover's position near Formosan waters noted as darkness lasted 36 hours. Paris protests December 15 war debt payments. National reports include a prison incident, weather freezes, a Knoxville blaze killing nine, labor strikes cost a billion dollars, and WPA relief growth.
The Rush County Farm Bureau holds its two day convention at the court house assembly room with new officers to be sworn in this afternoon. The Corn Show, organized by the Better Crops Association in cooperation with 4-H clubs and the Rushville Chamber of Commerce, will run December 28 to 30 with Floyd Hiner named Corn King and judging by 4-H clubs from townships.
Harry G. Leslie former Indiana governor and Republican leader died suddenly of a heart attack Friday night at St. Francis Hospital in Miami Florida. Since his governorship 1929 1933 he worked in life insurance.
The Kappa Kappa Sigma sorority sponsors a benefit dance at the Auditorium Tuesday night December 21. Don Maines and his band of Anderson will play from 9:00 to 1:00 for the fundraiser. Proceeds go to the school milk fund.
The Carthage Citizen promotes a Let's Get Acquainted campaign offering a year's subscription for $1.00 with a deadline before January 1. Several long-time readers renew, including Verna Hill, M F Lovett, G T Lampkins, Butler Hill, and Maude Rohm with Belle Phelps. New and returning subscribers urged to join for full year of hometown news.
Funeral services were held at the home of Walter Mann Monday at 1:00 p.m. for the stillborn baby of Mr. and Mrs. Donald Mann. Rev. Morris Wilson of Arlington Christian Church officiated. Burial followed in Arlington cemetery. A. B. Thompson served as funeral director.
Rush county led all counties with 36 medals in 42 placings in the state Corn Club contest. Bartholomew county breeder R L Heilman topped yields at 179.1 bushels per acre among 1157 growers in 69 counties, securing the second largest yield on record. Heilman’s long record includes 14 prior medals and multiple championships, credited to a top crossed hybrid strain.
The United States Civil Service announces open competitive exams for Naval architect at 3800 dollars yearly. Other posts include assistant marketing specialist meat grader at 2600, physiologist poultry and senior associate and assistant poultry at 2600 to 4000, principal consultant in child welfare services at 5600. The Carthage High Blue Raiders defeated the Manilla Owls 35 to 13 on the Rushville floor. Bob McMichael scored 18 points and Cook added 9 as the defense limited Manilla to three points in the second half while the reserves fell 20 to 16.
Carthage business section glows with colored electric lights. Ben Neal, local Public Service Company representative, completed wiring on Main and Mill streets adding Christmas spirit.
Real estate activity in Rush County shows a small monthly rise from November 1 to 30. Mrs. Anna Downey reports 34 transactions totaling 37,715 dollars. Carthage entries include multiple deeds and parcels with prices ranging from 1 to 700 dollars.
Rush county received 2770.83 dollars as its share of the semi annual distribution of state excise receipts. Floyd I. McMurray announces the distribution basis is average daily attendance. The common school fund totals 498503.07 dollars with state wide attendance 651638 pupils. Each county gets 0.765 dollars per pupil.
Four Rushville sites the Cities Service Oil bulk plant Frazee's lumber yard Mullins Gilson manufacturing and the Nickel Plate railroad station were burgled Wednesday night. Police report no items missing and suspect same individuals.
Mrs. James Terhune and her son Albert attended the funeral of Mrs. Terhune's uncle, Ben Hand, held in Butlerville last Wednesday.
Mrs M J Kyser, mother of M F Kyser, remains in poor health. Dr R H Spangler is reported seriously ill at his home on North Main Street.
Mr and Mrs Howard Hinshaw of near Dunreith are the parents of a seven pound daughter born at the Coleman hospital in Indianapolis December 4. Mrs Hinshaw was Miss Lucille Binford of near Carthage.
Seventy people gathered at the school Monday night for an oyster supper marking the December meeting of the Ripley Township Farm Bureau. Donald Ruby presided as officers were elected for 1938 with Ruby named president, Harry Bentley vice president, Donald Staten secretary treasurer, and Florence Parker retained as social and educational director.
In a South East Street duplex, Finley Nelson suffered a blow to the eye during a ghostly intrusion Monday night. Neighbors report fires and noises as unknown intruders left in haste, with no doors locked and the building active for inside work.
A 1937 Ford V-8 Tudor was found Friday morning abandoned in a ditch north of the Twin Silo farm on the Knights town pike. The car was wrecked, front axle and right fender damaged, switch on, gas tank empty. Patrolman Foster investigated and towed it to Tommie's Service Garage. It was later learned the car had been stolen December 1 at New Castle. Crow Sales Company tow truck removed it Monday afternoon.
An oil explosion in the servicing department sparked a fire at the Harlan Watkins Auto Agency Tuesday morning causing about 45000 in damage. Ten used cars and four new ones were destroyed along with office equipment. An employee arrived to report the blaze. Greensfork Richmond firms aided in preventing spread to nearby homes.
