The Indiana State Fair kicks off its 100th anniversary with big-name entertainers Jan Garber Phil Harris and Herb Shriner. Local notes report service members in Korea and Italy and a wave of community updates from Carthage and surrounding areas.
The Rev and Mrs Chapman escaped injury when plastering collapsed from the parsonage ceiling Monday night just before they retired. They regarded themselves lucky that the incident occurred in the bedroom rather than later.
Mr and Mrs Walter Chonan and son Robert return from a trip to Traverse City Michigan to visit daughter Mrs Fred Fieming and family. They later travel to Evansville for a few days to see relatives and attended races at Dade Park. They called on Mr and Mrs Malggim Jessup and family. Johnnie Jessup and Robert attended a program at the new amphitheater in Evansville.
A record notes an E license issued at Indianapolis involving Jesse E. Kyser of Carthage and Charlotte Indianapolis.
One hundred sixty five 4-H steers owned by 103 members from 14 counties are entered in the Sixth Southeastern Indiana District 4-H Fat Steer Show and Sale at Rushville on September 13. The Rushville Chamber of Commerce sponsors prizes and ribbons with judging by Gerald Clodfelter of Greencastle. The sale offers substantial cash prizes from breed associations and industry partners, with proceeds going to exhibitors.
East St. Christian church Sunday school picnic drew about fifty attendees at the overflowing well west of Carthage with a generous meal and good fellowship.
Rush Lodge No. 580 will hold its regular meeting next Wednesday night September 8 at 8 p m daylight saving time with members urged to attend.
Mrs. Cecil attended with Pike and daughter Martha Sue and Mrs. Joe Alexander for a Sixth Grade Wiener Roast at Memorial Park in Rushville Wednesday evening. The event honored Sherry Nichols who is moving to Indianapolis.
Mr and Mrs A W Winfield and daughter Mrs Ramona Lloyd and her daughter Susan returned from a motor trip visiting Albany New York with Mr and Mrs Fred Doebber and family They stopped at many points of interest including Cooperstown Hall of Fame and Niagara Falls.
Mrs. Noah Leisure expresses gratitude to relatives neighbors and friends for flowers cards and gifts received during her hospital stay. The note conveys appreciation for support and well wishes.
Mrs. Ralph Truitt and Mrs. Cecil Pike accompanied their daughters Sue Ann Truitt and Mary Lu Pike to the Indiana State Fairgrounds on Tuesday for the State Fair Girls School of Home Economics from August 26 to September 6.
Sam L Newsom will enter the state wide spelling contest at the State Fairgrounds in the Woman's Building next Sunday afternoon August 31 at 2 oclock Daylight Savings Time. Last year his entry was late but he served as an honorary judge and he won the Rushville Historical Society spelling bee in February. A style show will follow the contest at the fair grounds.
Joe Switzer music director of New Salem High School died at Methodist Hospital Indianapolis Monday at 10 35 am following an operation a week earlier. He taught in New Salem since 1947 after earlier posts in Parke Benton and Warren counties and was a Central Normal College graduate. He leaves his widow three sons Billy Bob and Dick twins and several siblings with parents residing in Indianapolis.
Mrs Maude Schutt of west of Carthage has returned home after medical treatment at Major Hospital Shelbyville. Her condition is satisfactory. Twice Four Bridge Club met at Mrs Mary Taylor's home at 1:00 PM Wednesday. High prize won by Gladys Smith and low by Edna Nelle Kennedy. Guests included Bertha Beck Rachel King Leone Moser Anna Mildred Gardner and Mary Ellen McClurg. Dainty refreshments were served.
Mrs Gladys L Page is appointed to teach art. A Ball State Teachers College alumna, she previously taught in Marion city schools and Pendleton. She most recently taught in Tucson Arizona.
Mrs Inez Binford and niece Miss Lois Rahey of Holland Va visited Mrs Anna Anderson and plan to return to Virginia Thursday. Mrs Leon Cook and daughter of Tipp City Ohio and Mrs Arlis Lukens of Poughkeepsie NY visit their father Jesse Kyser for a few days. Rev and Mrs E W Chapman and Mrs Earle Barrett attended Western Yearly Meeting at Plainfield Ind last Thursday. Mrs Bessie Hazelrigg of Converse visits Ed Bly household this week. Mrs Howard B H Henley Mrs H T Beher and Miss Ruth White were in Indianapolis Tuesday. Mr and Mrs Ralph Pearson and Claude Pearson with children visited Anderson Sunday evening. Mr and Mrs Cecil Pike attended a Farm Bureau dinner at Brookville Monday evening.
Ross Manche son of Mr and Mrs Raymond Manche has been chosen as a typical draftee by the Armed Services Network and Indiana Selective Service Command. His life story induction and basic training scenes will air on WIRE Indianapolis at 8 30 p m Friday August 29 with interviews from his parents and a fort Custer Michigan sequence.
Local social notes list numerous visits and dinners as families from Fort Wayne Batesville Indianapolis Greenwoodfield Davidson Wingate Hamilton Columbus South Bend and Howe host relatives and friends. Guests include the Browns Terhunes Spanglers McKnight Overman Di erkman and others with trips to Coney Island Cincinnati and Mississippi.
Richard Marshall departs Tuesday for Japan after visiting his parents Mr and Mrs Forrest Marshall and his brother Stephen.
Mr. and Mrs. Fred Flick returned Friday night from a two week trip that included the National Convention of Rural Letter Carriers in Stillwater Oklahoma and visits to Colorado Springs Denver and Pikes Peak where snow surprised them. They called on friends across Missouri Arkansas and Kansas and saw extensive flower gardens including 200 acres of flowers in Missouri where car loads of peonies and other blooms were shipped.

Nelson sells Rose Hill lots 3 and 4 to Odell and Grace Pitts. Wesleyan trustees transfer Lot 8 in Carthage. Roy Shelhorn sells Lot 2 in Milroy to John and Martha Lessing. Small families sell Carthage lot 101 in Henley Clark Addition to Stevens.

The Leisure reunion gathered about 80 guests Sunday at Rushville Park. New officers were elected: President Russell Leisure. vice president Hugh Weber. secretary treasurer Mrs. Scott Campbell of Elwood. Next meeting planned for Elwood the last Sunday in August. Attend Wedding Mr William Cook and Norma Straw wed at Rockville on Sunday.

The poultry department anticipates 31,159 dollars in cash premiums as Indiana producers prepare to showcase hatchings and poultry products amid rising national chicken consumption.

Hoosier entertainers return to Indiana for the State Fair Centennial with Harris Shriner Garber and orchestra performing in the Coliseum August 23 to 31 and 31 to September 5. Barnes-Carruthers present the 1952 State Fair Follies August 31 to September 5 featuring 100 cast, 40 chorus members and 12 star acts from Super Circus and Ed Sullivan shows.
Indianapolis August 26 The Indiana State Fair will award 16815 in total cash premiums across Agriculture and Horticulture divisions. Homer E Schuman director of the Agriculture Building at Columbia City listed prizes by division including grain 3456 tobacco 189 vegetables 3752 pomology 2856 25 apiary 1200 floriculture 5362.
