Mrs Mary E Stevens age 78 died at the home of her daughter Mrs David Whitton Richmond at 1 00 am Friday August 21 She had lived in Carthage eight years ago then with her daughter in Richmond Funeral services were held at Little Blue River Baptist church August 23 Burial was in Little Blue River cemetery Survivors include two children Fred Stevens of Mays and Mrs David Whitton of Richmond plus four grandchildren two brothers and a sister Card of Thanks expresses gratitude for sympathy from friends.

James R Furbay delivers the message in his final Sunday with the congregation while pledges for the fiscal year are due. About five hundred people attended the store's opening last Saturday. Ladies received paring knives and gentlemen flashlights as souvenirs, in short supply by evening. Prizes were awarded in a drawing with Donald Ruby taking a 35 piece chinaware set, Mrs. Ruth Gray an electric percolator, and W. Fishel a five piece graniteware set.
County Superintendent John E. Goode announced township schools open September 4 for registration and September 8 for classes. Children aged six on or before January 1, 1937 may enroll as beginning pupils. State board adopted new elementary texts in spelling physiology and hygiene geography history and grammar for first eight grades. Students may be excused one day to attend the state fair with parental consent. The county teachers institute will be at Rushville on September 3.
Mr and Mrs Guy Ewing and family returned Sunday from a two week visit with relatives in Boulder and Denver Colorado Iowa and Missouri They toured Pike s Peak Estes Park and other points of interest totaling about 3700 miles Mrs Nettie Brookhart of Boulder Colorado accompanied them home.
Mr and Mrs J Malcolm Jessup announce the birth of a son, John Malcolm Jr, at Fairmount on August 22. The child is their first child and bears the family name in full.
Mrs Nellie Gilchrist Anderson of Indianapolis and former Carthage resident will lead a reminiscence gathering at the Christian church on Water Street Sunday evening August 30 at 7 00 p m All friends and old residents are urged to attend and participate.
Miss Mary Lu Bentley of Carthage and Earlham College graduate has accepted a position as English teacher at Manilla school for the coming year. She succeeds Mrs. Clarine Carmony Webster who resigned after her recent marriage.
The Eleventh Annual John B. Earnest School reunion will be held at the Hannegan Christians on Sunday September 6 1936.
The Sunshine Circle of Hannegan Christian church schedules a penny fair on September 2 and 3 at Robert Holt's wood-lot near the church. Activities include a playground, croquet, horseshoes, and evening entertainment with a well lit fair grounds and seating for visitors.
Mrs. Verna S. Hill Mrs. Rebecca Healey Miss Ruth White and Mrs. P J Sattler attended the opening of the new Fourth Church of Christ Scientist in Irvington last Sunday.
About 100000 ballots from 32 states flowed to the national straw vote headquarters in New York for first state by state tabulation. In 18 states Roosevelt led by 42.3 percent to Landon’s 50.8, with other candidates and debates noted as results roll in.
