Miss Mary Agnes Sleeth a prominent Indiana political figure dies at 4 50 p m at home 515 North Harrison Rushville after years of illness and a serious fall last November obituaries reflect her long public service and influence in state politics.
Rush County real estate sales in July totaled about $197000, the fourth straight month of year over year declines led by farm property. Farm land changed hands for $54000 while Rushville City and suburban trades totaled about $47000. Transfers include David and Patricia Magee selling parts of Lots 117 and 118 in Carthage's Henley & Clark Addition to Jesse and Avanell Howard.
Rev. Robert L. Kendall 26 of Hermiston Oregon has been engaged as minister at East Street Christian Church. Kendall a 1953 Northwest Christian College graduate pastored Othello Washington church four years before arriving in Carage. He and his family live in the new church parsonage on North Main Street. He will enroll at Butler University in September in the School of Religion for further schooling.
Rev. Robert Malone named new Carthage Wesleyan Methodist Church minister arriving from Converse church. He and Mrs. Malone will move to the Carthage parsonage Monday, August 19.
Philip Wendall Sprague arrives as Carthage High School coach. Mrs Sprague and their daughter join him at Mrs Nelle Newby’s home. The family moved from Lynn Indiana over the past weekend. Sprague will teach History Mathematics and Physical Education.
Mr and Mrs Forrest Marshall and son Stephen finished a twelve day journey covering 3000 miles through New England and Canada. They saw a Boston Red Sox game and a Detroit game, visited Arcadia Park Bar Harbor and Greenfield Village Henry Ford Museum, and stopped at Thousand Islands and Detroit. Jace Robert Helms was born August 3 at Henry County Hospital to James R Helms and spouse in Carthage R F D 2.
Shelby Motors advances to the state semi finals by beating Arlington 5-0 in the district tournament final at Arlington. Bill House limits Arlington to two hits with six strikeouts, while Norm Morris allows eight hits and no walks. Shelby scores two runs in the fifth and three in the sixth as Baker Woods and Larrison collect two hits each.
Rush County Extension Office received a supply of 4-H state fair tickets for members. Tickets valid for Wednesday August 28 through Saturday August 31. Tickets may be picked up at the Extension Office.
Gerald Shanahan of Rushville Prudential Insurance representative for the Carthage district will be vacationing next week. Patrons are advised to call the Rushville office for information.
Districts announce August 30 to September 4 openings and reorganizations. Milroy, Mays, New Salem, Arlington, Richland, Carthage, Webb, Glenwood, Ging, Manilla and Raleigh schools list principals, new coaches, and retirements or resignations. Notable moves include Robert Hardourt stepping up at Milroy, Don Clement replacing Hine at Arlington, and multiple staff swaps across elementary and high school departments.
The General Telephone Company of Indiana invites Carthage residents to a public meeting at 8 PM Tuesday August 27 at the Community Center Auditorium. Company representatives will show a dial telephone film and answer questions about the new automatic dial service slated to begin the next day. The Carthage exchange conversion costs about 177000 dollars as part of the company’s effort to improve service.
John A. Jackson fireman USN son of Mrs Dora L Gulley of Carthage Indiana returned to Newport Rhode Island on August 1 aboard the destroyer USS Johnston after a three month Mediterranean cruise with the U S Sixth Fleet. The ship conducted anti submarine warfare and air defense exercises with liberty ports at Palma Valencia Cannes Marseille and Lisbon. After a month in Newport the destroyer is to depart for North Atlantic anti submarine warfare exercises.
Mrs. Lucille Phelps of Goshen Indiana spends a week in Carthage as a guest of friends. She joined a Tuesday dinner with Mrs. Opal Flick and the Davis and Steward households.
The Methodist Youth Fellowship met August 7 with 23 members at Rev. and Mrs. Davis home for a hamburger fry. The evening included singing prayer and a quiz on The Disciples. Pamela Hunt presided as vice-president and discussed the Watermelon Feed slated later this month.
The M.Y.F. met Monday evening at 8:00 p.m. Annalee Lynch gave the lesson Life A Base ball Game. Lois Hawkins presided. A Watermelon Feed was discussed and is planned for Friday at 6 p.m. on the church lawn if ready. Thirty one members attended the meeting with refreshments after adjournment. Mrs Miriam Yankiner Williams of Knightstown is slowly improving at Rush Memorial Hospital. Mrs C G Hill is at Rush Memorial Hospital this week for observation. Mrs Grant Henley is at Rush Memorial Hospital this week for blood transfusions.
Morristown couples host guests including Delbert Mann and Russell Shutt. Indianapolis visitors Lynn and Debra Tetrick travel home after week with the Alexander family. Many dinners and calls occur across Greenfield, Indianapolis, Fort Wayne, Yorktown, Sparta Michigan, Jacksonville Florida, and other towns.
Wanda Whitfield a 15 year old from Carthage was acquitted by a grand jury of murdering her father Clarence Whitfield 53 a railroader at their home on South Market Street Investigations say the shooting followed an intoxicated quarrel between Clarence and Wanda's mother Beulah Beulah was not seriously injured and Wanda was remanded to welfare custody before the no bill was returned and she was released to her guardians.
Rush County 4H Club Council met August 12 with President Clarence Dyer. A report on the 4H Camp noted 108 club members and 13 adults attended, milk provided for youngsters, and plans to raise camp capacity. The 4H achievement date was set for November 18 with Carl Ging chairing, joined by Laurence M. Smith and Mrs. Harold Wilkison and Mrs. Ora Clayton.
Rush County 4 H Club members enjoyed Hassmer Hill camp August 8 11 with 108 enrollees. Four teams Chattanooga Choo Choo B Q Santa Fe Chiefs and Wabash Cannonball led by engineers secretaries and reporters, all detailing crafts swimming hiking stunt night vespers and recreation.
Mr and Mrs Wilbur McCorkle came home Saturday after a four day trip to Lake Shafer. Mrs Elizabeth Winslow of Howe Indiana arrived at Mrs Maria Grays home Thursday and will stay a week as her guest.
Frank Gilbert of Cincinnati Ohio died suddenly on August 14 1957. Born May 25 1898 in Rush County he served 25 years as a Cincinnati city employee. Surviving sister and brother reside in Carthage plus a niece and nephew. Services set for 2 pm Saturday at Thompson Hampton Funeral Home with burial at Asbury Park Cemetery Morristown Indiana.
At the Fayette County Fair in Connersville on Monday August 12 Gold Medal Calf Show results crown Golden Dawn Farms Ripley township as Grand Champion Angus steer. James Meyers Noble township claims reserve grand champion Shorthorn steer along with multiple Meyer family wins in Shorthorn and Angus classes. L E Stevens Stevens farms Glenwood shows top Angus female and junior yearling Angus heifer. Maplewood Hereford farm Rushville township earns fifth place junior yearling Hereford heifer. A J Meyer and Sons place in several summer yearling classes.
The third annual State Tractor Pulling Contest at the Indiana State Fair Saturday August 28 features 72 tractors. Winners from nine district contests compete for cash prizes and trophies in four weight classes up to 3 800 5 000 6 200 and 7 400 pounds with entrants 16 years and older including women competitors.
The New York Central and Railway Express Agency petitioned the Indiana Public Service Commission to discontinue the Milroy station agency. The plan would convert Milroy to a non agency station, possibly removing the building, with hearings set for September 4 at 9 a.m. in Milroy. If approved, Milroy business would transfer to Rushville or Greensburg offices.
The P T O will manage the school second hand book store this year. Parents or children may bring good used books to Principal Charles Morris’s office. Office hours next week are 9 am to 12 and 1 pm to 3 pm. No books sell until August 30, organization day.
