Postmaster William Alexander announces the morning mail will be dispatched fifteen minutes earlier each day. Patrons must drop letters in the outside box by 7:30 a.m. to catch the morning mail, while the evening dispatch remains at 4:45 p.m.
Mr and Mrs James Wells and daughter of Carthage returned home Saturday night after a three week vacation at Lake Freeman. His father Dr C E Mc Cready of Gary Indiana spent three weeks with them and his parents Mr and Mrs James H Wells Sr of Indianapolis were guests for several days.
Mr and Mrs Forrest Marshall and their son Steve attended a Cincinnati Pittsburg baseball doubleheader Sunday. The Cincinnati Reds won both games, highlighting a strong home performance.
Miss Pam Hunt enjoys a ten day vacation in Baltimore staying with college friends Miss Chris Sherman and Miss Janice Weinblatt. The group plans to spend this weekend in New York City.
Mr and Mrs Caleb Marsh receive the overseas address for their son Pvt Larry J Marsh RA 16765289 Co E 1st BG 8th Cav A P O 24 San Francisco California The message confirms the soldier is assigned to the unit and location as part of military mail zoning.
Billie Jean Henley has returned home after major foot surgery at Methodist Hospital Indianapolis. Kathy Geise comes home from Rush Memorial Hospital after surgery. Mrs Henry Stenger, Mrs David Ray, and Mrs Worth Pitts continue recovery at local homes or hospitals. Cleve Geise released from Rush Memorial Hospital.
Mr and Mrs Lyle O Plank with Kimberly and Douglas and Mr and Mrs DeWayne Roland of Knightstown recently completed a ten day Florida vacation. The group visited Ocala St Peters burg Tampa Vero Beach West Palm Beach Cape Canaveral Ft Lauderdale Miami Winter Haven and Jacksonville. They also toured Kentucky Tennessee Alabama and Georgia.
Kittrell Porter, son of Mr and Mrs Joe Porter of Carthage, won the 6th annual Little 50 bicycle race on Wednesday night at Knightstown Sunset Park. Roger Kinnerly, also of Carthage, captured the Little 25 bicycle race the same evening, earning a 1964 season swimming pool pass at Knightstown pool and a baseball and bat.
Among those at the Jackson Family Reunion held Sunday at Cambridge City Park were Mr and Mrs Robert Jackson and Mr and Mrs Dale May with sons and Mr and Mrs Luther Jackson of Churubusco Indiana visiting Dale May and family and other relatives.
Mr and Mrs Leon Whitfield and their children have moved into a home south of Carthage that was previously owned by Mr and Mrs Tom McClurg. Roger Norfleet and family of Carthage have rented the Whitfield residence on North Main Street.
Members and their families at Walnut Ridge Friends Church hosted a cooperative dinner and social on Sunday to honor Rev. Timothy Straub before his move to Michigan. The gathering included a gift presentation to Rev. Straub and his family.
Carthage High School Band, under Band Director Bob Edwards, joins several parades and events. They perform as band No 4 at a Shelbyville Fair contest this Saturday August 10 at 7 p.m. at the fairgrounds, then the Farmer's Day parade at the State Fair on Tuesday August 27, 1963. They also head to Ball State Band Day in September at Muncie and previously appeared at the Delaware County Fair in Anderson July 26, placing 11th in Class B with a plaque.
Mr and Mrs Merrill Magee learned their son Airman George M Magee was selected Air man of the Month for May 1963. He received a 25 dollar bond and a three day pass after serving with the United States Air Force since January 1956 and stationed at Wheelus Air Force Base Tripoli Libya.
All band uniforms must be turned in for cleaning and reissue before the State Fair. Return uniforms to Mary E. Bush or Edna Kennedy on August 12 13 or 14. Uniforms reissued August 22 at the school. Members failing to turn in uniforms or pay band rent will not attend the State Fair on August 27.
Paul Clevidence arrived in Indianapolis by jet plane last week from a 12 days vacation spent with his sister Mrs. Earl Myers and Mr. Myers at Temple City California. During his stay they spent several days on a fishing trip at Bishop California in the Sierra Mountains. Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Wilson and sons met him at Indianapolis and accompanied him home.
Mr and Mrs Rex Edwards with sons Jeff and Stevie and Mr and Mrs Keith Ray with daughters Norene and Amy spent a week at Lake Freeman and returned Sunday. On Friday Edwards Jeff Ray Norene attended the Chicago Cubs versus Giants game in Chicago. The Brown family from Daleville joined the two couples for a weekend visit.
Mr and Mrs William Harold Dixon attended the annual dinner party hosted by the American Fletcher National Bank of Indianapolis. The social hour and dinner were at the Highland Golf and Country Club followed by the Broadway stage show Carousel at the Hilton A Brown outdoor theater Star light Musicals venue.
Five boys from Walnut Ridge Friends Church attended Quaker Haven Church Camp at Dewart Lake Syracuse Indiana last week and returned home Friday. Attendees were Walter O Neal Dan Hunt Dave Hunt Lynn Ray and Tommy Blessinger. Accompanying them home were Mr and Mrs Tommy O Neal of Carthage Mrs Gern O Neal of Gwynneville and Mrs Albert Ray and son Dwayne.
Indianapolis residents Elmer Fenner and son Arthur Fenner attended the Pioneer Engineers Club gathering at Rushville Conservation grounds over a long weekend. Elmer displayed a homemade steam engine. Arthur stayed overnight with Elmer, Larry, and Mrs Esla Fenner. Nearby, Lola Stephens visited Ella Fannin in Olive Hill Kentucky with Eugene Redick and daughter. The Rolands visited H E Koehler in Knightstown and kept up with Mrs Frank Allison near Grant City.
Trustee Robert McKain announced three new women teachers will join Carthage Grade and High Schools. Mary Ann Arthur brings six years in Indiana schools and will teach English and Speech. Vera R. Compton has over five years of training and 37 years in Madison Fayette and Rush County Schools, teaching Latin and Math. Margaret S. Baker, a Ball State graduate, will serve as Librarian for Mays and Carthage High Schools and also teaches English.
Public Service Company announces a new total electric home rate approved by the Public Service Commission of Indiana. The rate applies to all electric homes including rural and urban residences and separately metered apartments. Customers using more than 500 Kwh monthly are charged 1.2c per Kwh, down from 1.5c after 600 Kwh.
Mr and Mrs Odell Pitts returned home Friday from several days spent on business in Sedalia Missouri Mrs Charles Cheever of Vevay is visiting this week with Mr and Mrs Forrest Moore
Rush County Fair results crown numerous 4H achievements. Sandra Benson of Posey Township wins Dairy Show with a 4H Jersey senior calf. Joy Reddick leads in 4H Vegetable entries. David Whitfield Danny Hunt John Ewing and Daryl Souder earn multiple 4H honors in Soil Conservation and related projects. Melinda Lafuse claims steer class reserve championship and junior showman honors.
Mrs. Fern Revolt and her son John spent the weekend in Indianapolis visiting her daughter and family the Reed household. They attended a Carmel little league game Saturday afternoon where Ollie Reed, Mrs. Revolt’s grandson, played in the field.
Perfect Circle edged Carthage 8 to 4 in ten innings as Tanksley Nets a double Netherly triples and Paugh singles Byard doubles in a late go ahead rally. Carthage batters Magee and Edwards each triple while R Magee goes 4 for 5 in defeat.
Connersville wins the league tournament final 6 to 1 over Carthage as Russell earns the win with eight strikeouts and three hits allowed. Magee homers for Carthage while Cville’s Good and Cates add two doubles each to fuel the attack. Earlier, Connersville edged Perfect Circle 1–0 in a marathon semifinal. Carthage beat McCorkle Stone 9–3 in another semifinal.
Cynthia Pearson expresses gratitude for winning Miss Rush County Fair Queen and thanks Wayne Logan county queen contest chairman and Kappa Sigma Sorority of Carthage for sponsorship. She recalls appreciation for cards gifts and calls and notes the wonderful week and memories made.
Smith calls attention to the issue of student dropouts urging students and parents to discuss staying in school. He emphasizes that continued schooling improves individuals and the country as unskilled jobs fade away.
Mr and Mrs Eugene Reddick of Carthage along with her brother and family Mr and Mrs Bob Stephens and children of Indianapolis spent from Saturday until Monday visiting Mr and Mrs George Cartwright and family at Elmhurst Illinois. Mrs Cartwright is a sister of Mrs Reddick and Mr Stephens.
A Memorial Fund is established for Earl Carter who died February 27 1963 in Iowa City. The fund total reached 236.60 with a public sale of his climbing gear raising 158.60. Contributions come from climbers and supporters across several states. The fund will back a Carter Memorial Mountain Library in the Iowa Mountaineers clubhouse. Bill King donated a Memorial Certificate and a mountain register bearing both clubs names. The club considers placing the register on Mt Carter in Idaho's Sawtooths or another peak.
Mrs. Loyall Hunt sustained a painful injury to a big toe after it was caught in a lawn mower. She required hospitalization.
The Carthage Fall Festival Queen Contest invites any Ripley Township Carthage student to enter. Sponsors must back each contestant with an entry fee paid to the Festival Committee. Queen crowned Wednesday night to open the festival activities.
The Baltimore and Ohio and Erie Lackawanna railroads petitioned the Public Service Commission to discontinue agency service at Arlington in Rush County and remove the station building. If approved, Arlington freight traffic would move through the Rushville agency.
The Steering Committee for Upper Big Blue River Watershed met in Knightstown on August 1 to elect officers and form by laws. Members include Alvin Hardin and Kenneth Oldham among others from Henry and Rush counties. The group plans resource development and a Conservancy District.
A son was born Tuesday to Mr and Mrs Dennis Norfleet of R R J Carthage at Rush Memorial Hospital.
Pvt Alvin H. Davis returned home from Ft Polk La after months of National Guard training. L/Cpl Darrell Duane Davis arrived home from two weeks summer Marine Reserves training in San Diego California.
Mr and Mrs Kenneth Rhodes traveled to Rushville to visit Mrs Ethel Hartzler and her sister and brother in law Mr and Mrs Vern Mays of Terre Haute on Saturday evening at their home.
The report notes a 67 pound buffalo caught by Monroe City’s Town Marshal in the southwest. Northeastern waters run fair to good with smallmouth on St Joe and Tippecanoe rivers and pike at Lake Wawasee. Central and northwestern lakes reveal crappie, bass, walleye, and catfish activity with various baits. Southeastern waters are very spotty due to high, murky conditions.
Rush Circuit Court overruled a motion for a new trial in the Erma Marie Dalrymple vs. David Harold Ruby damage case. A jury recently heard the case. December 9 was set for trial in a separate damage action Warren Gail Dalrymple vs. the same defendant.
Mrs Forrest Beck and Mrs Delmer Sipes attended the Department American Legion Auxiliary Convention at the French Lick Sheraton Hotel from Friday through Sunday. They served as delegates from the Carthage American Legion Auxiliary.
