On the Beat reports Chi Rho met Monday evening April 25 at the Christian Church with 13 members 1 visitor and 2 teachers present. The meeting opened with the Christian Flag Pledge and Bible Pledge.
Mrs Forrest Moore and Mrs George Moore led registration at the Rushville district meeting of Christian churches attended by Mrs Forrest Moore Mrs Russell Shutt and Mrs Luther Hall Friday.
Mrs. William H. Dixon checked into the Caylor-Nickel Clinic at Bluffton for observation on Wednesday. Mrs. Paul Mayfield of Carthage underwent major surgery last week at the New Castle Clinic.
William H. Dixon, cashier of Carthage State Bank, attended the Indiana Bankers Association Conference on Monday and Tuesday at the French Lick-Sheraton Hotel in French Lick, Indiana.
Darrell Ronan attends Grand Chapter in Indianapolis. Carthage School Music Department presents its Spring Musical at Tweedy Memorial Community Center on May 6 at 7 30 p m. Five sketches feature Blue Notes 8th Grades Campus Life Kid Stuff and Latin American with the High School Band between acts. Reserved seating. tickets from band or chorus members.
The committee will hold its annual meeting Friday evening April 29 at the REMC building. Officers will be elected and plans made for activities in the coming year. Representatives from different organizations are urged to attend. The meeting starts at 8 00 p.m.

The Carthage High School senior class thanks Mr. and Mrs. Rhoades for sponsoring the senior trip and guiding the group. They toured Pittsburgh Washington DC New York City Philadelphia and enjoyed monuments the White House the Statue of Liberty and the Liberty Bell. May activities list dates from May 5 to May 20 including exams and the junior-senior prom.
The first grade finished work in their workbooks All Around With Dot and Jim. Becky Weiss wins the Improvement Award. Mrs. Alexander praises third grade Weekly Leader test scores. Fourth grade works on poems for English class. Fifth grade studies South and Central America. Nice weather spurs baseball diamonds as girls join in.
Miss Carfield teaches about harms of smoking and drinking while students prepare May tulips and birds decor. Children bring flowers and brighten the room as spring mood fills the class. They write English letters hoping for replies. Linda Apple and Stirl Back celebrate birthdays April 27. In arithmetic they divide decimals.
Rush County township high schools schedule commencement May 4 through May 18 totaling 158 diploma candidates. New Salem leads with 38 seniors followed by Milroy with 37. other totals include Carthage 28 Mays 20 Manilla 19 and Arlington 16. Commencement speakers include Rev. Garrison at Manilla Dr. Pruett at Mays and Arlington Rev. Miller at Milroy Dr. Esch at Carthage and Hugh Walters at New Salem. Baccalaureate services run May 1 at Manilla May 8 at Mays Arlington Milroy and May 15 at Carthage New Salem. The Ripley Needletwisters 4H Club met April 20 with reports, demonstrations, and plans to attend the State Fair. Also noted May 2 is a deadline for wool producers to apply for federal payments.
Tom Tucker and Marvin Heim were elected as District IX reporter and sentinel respectively. Tom, initially a candidate for vice president, was defeated and then nominated for reporter and won. Mike Heim sought treasurer but lost. Tom serves as parliamentarian and Marvin as secretary of the local chapter next year.
Larry Nigh an 11 year old son of Mr and Mrs Bob Nigh underwent major heart surgery last Thursday at Robert Long Hospital Indianapolis. He is improving and the Nigh family expresses gratitude to all blood donors with a current Riley Hospital mailing address Ward B.
Monday May 2 is the final day to file mortgage exemptions at the Bush County Auditor's office. Taxpayers must submit forms before closing hours to preserve eligibility for exemptions.
The Rush County community discusses the upcoming Indiana primary with Nixon and Kennedy entering the race. Lawrenceburg Speedway announces the 1960 season opener on Sunday May 1 at the quarter mile dirt track. Six races two 10 lap heats and one 25 lap feature for modified and non mod classes. Track upgrades include higher banked turns new wheel fence improved facilities and lighting. Time trials start 12:30 p.m. with racing at 2:00 p.m.
George Ober a 73 year old Arlington resident and blacksmith was found dead Friday evening in his room at a home shared with Mrs. Marie Adams. Authorities say he died of natural causes after months of ill health and doctor care. Born June 23 1886 in Ross County Ohio he moved from Waverly to Arlington 30 years ago and had worked as a railroad laborer in Ohio. Survived by brother Melby F Ober Springfield Ohio and sister Mrs Orville Otey Washington Court House Ohio. two brothers preceded him in death.
Mettie Missouri Howell aged 72 of Seaman Ohio died April 22 at her daughter's home in Carthage. She was born March 18 1888 in Lewis County Kentucky to Thomas Logan and Priscilla Thacher Logan. She leaves husband Robert Howell five daughters Mary Jane Kinder Cecil Richmond Samuel Poppa Rebecca Retherford and Earl Dollahan one son William QO Stevens and two brothers D O Logan and Jesse Logan. Services were at 10 a m Monday at Hampton Funeral Home Carthage with burial Tuesday at 2 p m in Brown Cemetery Morehead Kentucky.
Melinda Dawn Steward infant daughter of Albert Lee and Mabel Hinton Steward of Carthage was stillborn at Rush Memorial Hospital at 5 15 p.m. last Friday. Survived by paternal grandfather Forrest Steward and maternal grandfather Lewis Hinton. Graveside rites conducted in Town Cemetery at Carthage by Rev. Ora Hisle at 3 p.m. Saturday. Hampton Mortuary of Carthage handled arrangements.
Mr and Mrs Forrest Moore and Mr and Mrs Al Nelson with their son traveled to Clifty Falls State Park Madison on Sunday and had dinner at the Park Inn. William Chapman and Russell Roland visited Harry Chapman in Cambridge City at Henry Co hospital Monday. Mr and Mrs Harry Rafferty of New Palestine were guests of Julie Smith and Mrs Josie on Sunday.
An official report shows 11,000 voters eligible for the 1960 Rush County primary with Rushville City precincts 1 and 6 leading, surpassing 1956 numbers. City breakdown 4,188 voters vs 6,812 outside, noting several precincts up from 1956 while most others trail.
Morton Memorial defended its county track title with ease, scoring 127 2/5 points. New Salem took second with 64 1/5, Milroy 24 1/5, Carthage 16 1/5, and Mays 13. Manilla and Arlington did not enter. Three meet records fell as Morton won ten events led by Lorenzo Beard with three wins and a frame of fast times. Jerry Patterson of New Salem set the low hurdles mark and Ferguson of Morton won the 880. Morton, Milroy and Carthage advance to Friday’s East Central Conference meet at Morton’s track.
Indiana Senator Joel Rhodes denounces former congressman Ralph Harvey as a do nothing lawmaker. He cites Harvey's 1950 education bill defeat and opposes oats price controls. Rhodes argues for a younger candidate with seniority to represent Indiana’s 10th District in Congress.
Mr and Mrs Howard McCorkle and daughter Donna and Norma Jean Sipes spent Sunday with Mr and Mrs Elmer Hall and sons near Homer. Sunday Mr and Mrs Fred Flick visited her sister Mrs Lee Enpo and Mr Ensinger at Os good.
