Local Gardeners prep for spring, Carthage Raiders thrash Sir Walters 12 0 in Raleigh, a store door lock mishap prompts police chatter, and candidate chatter from Rush County sheriffs race. Youths attend Scout night at Harry Leisure’s hay mow while Easter prep runs through the community with food sales and summer plans.
Rushville attorney James Sparks Foster announces his candidacy for the Republican nomination for Rush County prosecuting attorney. A 27 year old veteran, he practiced law in Rushville since 1952 with Kenneth L. Earnest, is a IU alumnus, and a member of the American Legion and Indiana Bar Association. He is married to Ruth Ann Miller and has one child.
The den met at Mrs. Ora Clayton home with den mother present. Roll call and clues were given as the group discussed play needs and oil. A run-through of the play was held and refreshments were shared by Gary Clayton Ricky Henley Dean Gardner James Ellis Dicky Patterson John Meade and Mrs Ora Clayton.
Janice Wilson and Tracy Simpson were chosen for Girl's State with alternates Nerva Pope and Shirley Todd. The Carthage Legion Auxiliary and Kappa Kappa Sigma sorority sponsor the trip to Bloomington from June 27 to 29.
Mr and Mrs Fred McManus returned Thursday from Florida where they spent the winter months.
The Carthage Legion Auxiliary announced winners in its Americanism contest. Jane Meade took first in Division II and Suzanne Bramel won Division I. Meade’s essay What America Means to Me appears this week in the school news, with judging by the Arlington English teacher and entries advancing to the district contest.
Miss June Kinder spent a week with her fiancee Cpl. James R. Hufford at Quantico Virginia. They also toured Washington D C during the visit.
Charlottesville and Carthage W. C. T. U. members held a joint institute at Grety Addison’s home with Westland guests. The day featured devotions, scripture from Matthew, songs, a saxophone solo, a playlet, and remarks by Mrs Isgrig. A carry-in lunch followed and the meeting closed with prayer.
Mrs Hattie Innis and Miss Shar lee Kyser of Rush County National Bank of Rushville joined a group of bank staff touring larger banks in Indianapolis on Wednesday.
In hospital ward at St. Vincent Hospital a boy named Mike Joseph, son of Mr. and Mrs. Royce Joseph, is a patient in the children’s ward. He would appreciate receiving cards from friends and family.
Muncie Indiana April 14 eighth annual High School Senior Day will be held Saturday April 24 at Ball State Teachers College. Plans are by the Student Executive Council Blue Key Clavia Alpha Phi Omega and the alumni office. Registration 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. in assembly hall. Dr John R Emens will welcome at 10:30. A panel on college life by five students. Tours around campus and departments around lunch. A 2:30 p.m. variety show by ROTC physical education majors fraternities and sororities followed by a mixer in the Student Center ballroom.
The Rush County Choral Group performed The Crucifixion at Rushville Christian Church last Sunday afternoon. It was sponsored by the Music Club and the Rush County Minister's Association under the direction of John 8. Anderson of Milroy, with attendees from Carthage including Mr. and Mrs. George Moore and Mr. and Mrs. Cecil Pike and daughter Martha Sue, and Mrs. Gertrude Jessup.
Den No 2 met at Mrs Lloyd Williams home in Charlottesville to open with pledge roll call and dues. The group rehearsed a Bardhol skit for a pack meeting and planned an Easter egg hunt with Ronnie Fannin as the Haster Bunny. Painting of Easter egg toothpick holders chickens and rabbits followed refreshments were served. Present were Donald Dalrymple Ronnie Fannin Charles Gatewood Neal Rucker Floyd Steward Jack Steward Michael Williams Dickie Fannin Marie Fannin and Mrs Williams the den mother.
Mr and Mrs Everett Webb of Carthage observed their 44th wedding anniversary and Mr and Mrs Charles Webb of New Palestine observed their 22nd anniversary last Sunday. They marked the occasion with a dinner at Buckleys in Cumberland and attended a show in Indianapolis.
Steve Williamson, 45, of Dunreith, died Wednesday afternoon of a heart attack while working at the Hugh Weber farm east of Carthage. He had worked at Chrysler in New Castle. Survivors include his widow Mrs. Erma Brooks Williamson, two sons and a daughter, three brothers, four sisters. funeral was Saturday at 2 pm at the Dunreith Christian church with Mrs. Louis Humes and Mrs. H. T. Beher singing, services led by Rev. John Chandler. Burial in Glencove Cemetery Knights Town.
Thelma Weidner of Carthage R1 was fined $1 and costs in Rushville Justices Court after a minor Saturday traffic accident in North Morgan. City police filed the charge for failure to have her vehicle under control.
A son was born April 6 at Rusk Memorial Hospital to Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Muir.
Rush County rural-urban fire survey panel met at the REMC building in Rushville at 7 30 p m to discuss firefighting problems with minimal attendance. Civil Defense chairman Pat Todd announced the meeting purpose and few representatives from outlying districts attended. Carthage attendees included Lowell Brooks, Hugh Roberts and David Grocox.
Marine Pfc. Darrell G. Kirk arrives at Inchon harbor aboard the Gen. McRae to join the 1st Marine Division in Korea. He is the son of Mrs. Louise Hodson of Route 1, Carthage Indiana.
J K Mosley undergoes eye removal surgery in Phoenix and remains in serious condition. Mrs Laura Beason and Mrs Hattie Porter attend Mrs Elbert Beason’s funeral in Greenfield. Beason dies from complications. Mrs Myrtle Miner visits Cincinnati. Mr and Mrs Arthur White visit West Lafayette with Mrs White’s sister Mrs C M Hadley. Mrs Kenneth Rhodes visits Rushville relatives. Vernon Fraze and children visit Ft Wayne family in Rushville for weekend.
Mrs Lestie Heifner entered Henry County Clinic Monday for observation and treatment. She is assigned room 205 and is under care of the hospital staff.
Children in the first three Fletcher Methodist classes will have an Easter egg hunt Saturday at 2 PM on the church lawn.
Dr and Mrs Richard McNabb and their son Ricky left Thursday for a Florida vacation.
The Fletcher Methodist Youth Fellowship meets weekly on Tuesdays and elected Rex Edwards as president Gertrude Stacey as vice president Marilyn Buckley as secretary Jimmy Terhune as treasurer and Dorothy Edwards as program chairman The group invites all Carthage youths not already in another church youth group to join and build a worthy organization.
Mr and Mrs Roy Stanley and family have recently moved from Carthage R R to Knightstown R R 2 northwest of Knightstown.
The Ripley Township 4H Boys hosted the 4H Girls for a skating party Tuesday night at the Rushville rink. Two busloads of students accompanied by parents sponsors and bus drivers joined the event led by Mr and Mrs Este Miller and Mrs Ora Clayton.
Good Friday services will be held at 2 p.m. in the Methodist church with Rev. E. L. Kierstead as speaker. Stores will close from 1 to 8 p.m. in recognition of nationwide Good Friday observances.
E N Fud Wagoner 50 owner of T P Wagoner Son Hardware in Knightstown died after a heart attack in his store. He attended Purdue University and belonged to Phi Gamma Delta. He was an Indiana Hardware Association member, a 25 year Mason, and served 25 years with the Knightstown volunteer fire department. Survived by widow Marcielle and mother Jessie Nay Wagoner.
Mrs Elmer Hunt entered Rush Memorial hospital on Tuesday for observation. The act records a routine medical admission for monitoring.

At a Board of Managers meeting Indiana Judges Association President Russell Gordon named Judges Robert Stewart John Niblack and William F Marshall to form a committee. They will study and possibly recommend legislation to give courts power to preserve marriages by creating a non paid panel for reconciliation similar to Oklahoma City's Family Clinic.
Mrs Russell Leisure and Mrs William Conway along with Margaret Delores Conway and Mr and Mrs Harry Faulkner traveled from Rushville on a two weeks visit to Miami Orlando and Daytona Beach Florida They visited beaches and city sights during the trip.

Officials announce a new box plant will begin operations May 3 in Knightstown at the former Clopay site. Hoosier Containers a corrugated container maker, with Jack Behringer as president and two vice presidents Jim Carr and K C Ferguson. Leadership includes W M Avery secretary and general counsel and Maurice Lukens as plant superintendent. Modern facilities will handle custom corrugated products.
The Carthage Lions Club held its regular meeting last Monday. Hugh Trowbridge was inducted as a new member by Ora Clayton. R. R. Hirschman of Indiana Bell spoke on the dial telephone system as Arthur Winfield introduced him. The club is canvassing households for the Rush Memorial Hospital White Elephant Sale on April 24, 1954, with W. H. Representatives from every Indiana county gather for the 80th annual Indiana Grand Chapter Order of the Eastern Star session at the Murat Temple Indianapolis. Delegates represent 135000 members. Mrs Aldine Klingman and William S LaFallette will preside.
