George V. Coffin 62, former Republican city and district chairman in Indianapolis, died Sunday afternoon. He previously served as Marion county sheriff chief of police and county clerk.
Angelo Gengo, Gary gunman and one of five long-term convicts who broke from Indiana State Prison on February 10, is now in custody in Salem Oregon after being picked up as a vagrant. Warden Kunkel stated the only remaining desperado at large is Theodore Hulburt of Indianapolis.
Richard Whitney, former five time president of the New York Stock Exchange, was admitted to Sing Sing prison in New York to serve a five to ten year term for grand larceny. He arrived at 12 20 p m Tuesday to start his sentence.
The chamber of deputies backed Edouard Daladier's national defense ministry 576 to 5 after he vowed to keep armament factories running amid strikes involving 150,000 workers. Norman H. Davis, a New York Tennessee diplomat, was named chairman of the American Red Cross by President Roosevelt.
The English Firemen's Association will sponsor a merchants' fair April 25 to 30 in Indiana. Alva McCain's car caught fire and spread to a nearby house causing 300 dollars in damage. Bradley Duncan, 10, received 200 dollars for paint spray injuries near Carpenter Body Works. A cast iron urn was stolen from a Vincennes cemetery. Ward Stilson plant in Anderson increased dress-makers to 550 for Easter demand.
Funeral services for Mrs. Phoebe Newsom were held Wednesday at 11 AM at Thompson Funeral Home with Rev. Murray S. Kenworthy officiating. The service cited Psalm 90 with the sermon theme What is Gained By Death.
Funeral services were held for Jesse Roberts age 35 at his parents home near Greenfield. He died Saturday in Indianapolis after reportedly taking poison in a downtown drug store. Survivors include his parents three brothers Arthur Martin Benton a sister Fay Boyle and nephew Hugh Roberts of Carthage.
Tuesday night visitors included Miss Lucille Easterling a Ft Wayne teacher and Miss Easterling superintendent of Indiana's Children’s Home in a notable social gathering with the Kenworthys.
Frank Offutt 78 prominent Rush county landowner and banker died last Thursday night at his son Clark Offutt's home southeast of Arlington. Funeral held Sunday at Arlington Christian church with interment in East Hill cemetery. Offutt owned about 1200 acres, served as Arlington State Bank president since 1914, began with the bank in 1905. Born January 6, 1860 in Posey township, he married Nora Conaway in 1889. she died in 1925. Surviving: son Clark, daughter Effie Bagley, and Priscilla Ann Offutt.

Delinquent tax properties listed for sale at Rush County Courthouse. First sale Monday by James Tarbet, county treasurer, with 45 parcels sold and 25 removed from the list after back taxes were paid. Sales continue for several days to clear the list and funds go to the general county fund.

Three Carthage businesses changed hands over the weekend. Eddie and Mrs. Carter take over Swing-In Cafe management after Mrs Alexander leased her equipment. A new Watts property shoe repair shop is planned with James E. Collins to move in by late April. Curtis Ray becomes manager of Beatrice Creamery Station, now open Tuesdays Thursdays and Saturdays after Jack Lowery’s stroke.
The Kappa Kappa Sigma sorority at Carthage schedules its annual commencement dance for Friday night April 22 in the Auditorium. George Kaiser and his eight piece band from New Castle will perform with vocal soloist Fred Davis and featured numbers by Kaiser on vibraphone. Proceeds benefit the school milk fund.
The Carthage Service Club held its bi monthly gathering Monday night at the high school gymnasium with dinner served by the Senior class and mothers. Bayard Baker presided and Virgil Tetrick directed entertainment including two Doris Tetrick solos. A talk by C A Rattiford of New York Central Railroad followed, while numerous members and guests attended from nearby towns.
The Earlham Post debuts with Ed Peacock as editor and Howard Henley as business manager both juniors of the Earlham class. Clarence Parker will serve as managing editor. Henley Parker hail from Carthage high school and will graduate with AB degrees in June 1939. The Post board will run elections again in March 1939 to choose successors.
R C Small, long ill at his North Main Street home, continues to show little change in his condition.
