An interesting letter from Edward Stinger of Seattle says he is getting along fine and may take an extended vacation to Pelican City Alaska for some fishing. He is currently employed at Black River Quarry Inc in Seattle Washington.
David Grocox announces he is a candidate for the Ripley Township advisory board subject to the Democratic primary on May 4, 1954. He cites strong interest in civic affairs and the school system where his children are enrolled. Grocox works at Container Corporation of America and is financial secretary of Hoosier Local 415 Papermakers of America.
The Band Boosters met at the school Tuesday night April 6 at 7 30 p m. Officers named were Greta Addison president Bill Ewing vice president and Nola Patterson secretary treasure.
On April 5 1954 at Mrs Ora Clayton home the den held flag ceremony led by Gary Clayton roll call and dues were paid minutes were read and upcoming pack meeting discussed Mrs Clayton read a story on oil and the boys rehearsed The Wizard of Oz refreshments were enjoyed by Dicky Patterson Charles Mann Gary Clayton David Ruby James Ellis Dean Gardner John Meade the reporter.
Mr and Mrs Howard E Henley returned home Saturday evening after spending a month in Florida They visited friends including Mrs L L Braybrook of Sarasota and Mr and Mrs Marion Schumbert in Jacksonville En route they stopped to see their daughter Mrs Max Haas and family in Massillon Ohio
Franklin White of Knightstown R A bought two registered brown Swiss cows with seven week old calves at side in New Palestine last Wednesday.
Six Fletcher Methodist church women gathered at Mrs Thekla Stinger’s home Tuesday to assemble articles for shipment overseas through their church aid project.
The Order of Eastern Star will hold Obligation Night at the Masonic Hall on Wednesday April 14. Officers are asked to attend in formal dress.
Mr and Mrs Charles Whitfield and their son Joe attended the 1st 2nd and 3rd District meeting of Rural Carriers at Walton on Saturday.
Notable guests attend the Globetrotter All Star basketball game at the Indianapolis Coliseum on Tuesday night. Included in the party were Mr. and Mrs. Ora Clayton, Mr. and Mrs. Harold Hardin, Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Heim, Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Sullivan Jr., Mr. and Mrs. Paul Clevidence, Miss Lavada Clevidence, and Eugene Wilson of Knights town.
Mrs. Pearl Webber of Knights Town was taken to Henry County Hospital in New Castle after a severe heart attack last Wednesday.
Dickie Moore of Indianapolis is gradually recovering at Robert Long hospital after a severe hemorrhage attack linked to measles. He is the son of Mr and Mrs Landon Moore and was hospitalized last week.
Frank Barnes athletic director of Shelbyville High School spoke to the Rushville Lions Club and guests Monday night. Attendees included Carthage and Rushville High School basketball teams, student managers coaches athletic directors and principals at the Durbin Hotel in Rushville.
Warren V. Nelson 56 owner of a hardware and building supply store in Arlington died at 4 30 p m Monday in Rush Memorial Hospital after a four year illness. He was a Morristown native, lived in Arlington since 1928, and had earlier owned Nash auto agency in Rushville. He served as president of the Arlington Telephone Company and belonged to the Arlington Christian Church. He married Lillian B. Jordan March 10 1920 and survived by wife three sons a daughter a brother and a sister and four grandchildren. Funeral services were held at the Arlington Christian Church with interment in Arlington East Hill Cemetery.
The Mixers Home Economics club met at Jonita Schneider’s home with Mary Nigh assisting. President Virginia Johnson led devotions and the group recited the creed. Gladys Butler gave the equipment lesson, and Mary Bush presented a paper on The Much Too Common Cold. Officers luncheon planned for May 3 at Arlington Christian church. A cake auction funded the club treasury. New members Eva Leisure and Polly Apple welcomed. W. S. C. S. meeting followed at Fletcher Methodist church with hosts and officers named.
Lightning struck a large barn on the William D Richardson farm two miles southwest of Falmouth at 5 30 am during a severe thunderstorm. The blaze totalled about 15000 dollars with seventy hogs perishing. The barn cattle shed and a garage burned with one auto destroyed and machinery damaged. Glenwood Fire Department saved a nearby tenant house occupied by the Eerl Cuffey family.
Robert May of R R 4 Rushville declares his bid for Rush County Sheriff in the Republican primary on May 4 1954. Born in Ripley County he spent most of life in Rush County and served in the U S Navy. He belongs to VFW American Legion Elks Lodge Masonic Phoenix 62 Rushville and Big Flatrock Church. He is married to Edna Kellam of Milroy with two children and works as a linotype operator for the Rushville Republican.
Rush Memorial Hospital Board accepted a bid of 3420.40 from Carl Norman of Rushville for Kool Vent Aluminum awnings to cover 35 double windows and the entrance, with Lions Club sponsors from Manilla Arlington Carthage Mays and Rushville arranging funds and attendance at the bid meeting. Installation expected within a month.

Mrs Betty Brooks and her children from Mays spent the weekend with friends in Indianapolis.
Miss Hazel Hill died Wednesday evening in Methodist Hospital at age 103. Funeral services were held at Flanner Buchanan Mortuary with graveside rites at Riverside Cemetery Carthage. She was born in Carthage to Robert and Alice Peters Hill and lived in Indianapolis after her parents died. She worked 12 years at William H Block Co retiring a year ago. Surviving relatives include an uncle Frank Peters of Florida and several cousins.
Charles W. Jackson, 74, of Brookville, died Tuesday at Margaret Mary hospital in Batesville after a long asthma battle. He spent winters with relatives in Carthage and lately lived part time with Mrs. Walter Smith in Metamora. Survives include sister Mrs. Ida Jones of Idaho and nieces and nephews including Mrs. Lettie Sparks, Robert Jackson, and Everette Hawkins. Funeral Friday at 2 p.m. at the Metamora church with burial in Metamora cemetery.
Samuel L. Trabue 75 former Rushville mayor and Rush County lawyer died at 6 15 PM Monday in a Cocoa Beach Florida hospital where he and Mrs Trabue were vacationing. He had been ill since Friday due to an occlusion. Survived by two daughters Janet Treesh Pensacola and Barbara Taylor Lafayette, widow Helen Trabue, a former Carthage teacher.
A Maple Valley couple Mr and Mrs Dennis Sipes held a pitch-in dinner last Sunday honoring their 54th wedding anniversary and their birthday anniversaries. Family members attended including Delmar Sipes and daughters Robert Jackson and sons and Michael Stevens of Carthage.
Luncheon guests included Mrs. W J Phelps Mrs H T Beher and Mrs Ella Nelson with Mrs Anna Sipe at Wamsley Tea Room Rushville on Thursday. Sunday visits featured the Ca sey sisters from Indianapolis and Grace H Porter and several other local families in Rushville Willow Branch Dayton Shelbyville Zionsville and Nameless Creek.
County Superintendent Charles M. DeMunbrun released the school calendar with May 3 to May 19 as closing and commencement dates for seven area schools. Manilla Arlington New Salem Mays Raleigh Carthage Milroy set May 16 and May 19 closures, with graduations and baccalaureates spread across May 3 to May 17.
Rushville and Rush County high school musicians won several awards at the Central Southern Indiana School Music Association auditions. Morton Memorial placed second in Class C bands and first in Class C mixed and boys choruses. Milroy won first in Class CC girls chorus and second in Class CC bands. New Salem took first in Class CC bands while Carthage and Arlington were second in Class CC bands.
Fire departments from the 10th District gathered at the Community Center Wednesday for a program and discussion of firefighting problems. Local Carthage Volunteers hosted the event and led the discussions.
The Ripley Township Woman's Christian Temperance Union will meet with Mrs Thelma Cooper Tuesday April 20 at 1 30 p m.
