Size of Beds and Men Shrink in Colonial Time
At Plymouth Plantation Massachusetts researchers note 17th century stools and furniture reflected shorter statures. The average man then stood about 5 feet 1 inch with narrow chest and shoulders while beds averaged four feet wide. By contrast modern American males average 5 feet 10 inches with taller statures. In 1900 about one in 25 men aged 20 to 30 was six feet or taller, and 1960 figures show the same trend continuing.
