Registration Day Proclaimed for Civil War Draft

President Wilson set September 12 as the day for men aged 18 to 45 who registered before to register for military service. The proclamation notes over 2.3 million could be called, with some ships to arms as early as October 1. The statement frames the draft as a final pledge of loyalty and unity, citing historical precedent and the younger generation’s readiness. William H. Jones Jr. Dies at 63 in Indiana Farm

William H. Jones Jr. 63 a major landowner and District Exemption Board member died Tuesday morning from a carbuncle at the brain base. Born October 21 1855 in Jeffersonville Ohio he lived in Indiana since 1899 piloting a near thousand acre farm with the largest silo in the world. He leaves wife Mollie and five children Herman Ruth and Mrs G W Clayton. Funeral was held Thursday at 2 PM at his residence with burial at Merom.

Change in Rural Mail Service from Pleasantville Route No. 2

Beginning September 1, the rural route from Pleasantville is discontinued. Mail to Pleasantville will be routed via Dugger instead of Carlisle, with the Dugger post office operating the former Pleasantville route. Route No. 2 previously supplied Pleasantville from Carlisle, carried for years by Greeley Risher.

Mrs. Jennie Kite Buried After Sudden Death

Funeral service for Mrs. Jennie Kite of Shaker Prairie Christian church was led by Rev. Grim of Vincennes. Interment followed at Shepherd cemetery. Born October 22, 1861, she died suddenly in her sleep the prior week. She leaves husband Edwin Kite, daughter Ruth Wolfe of Evansville, and two stepdaughters Bert Wolfe and Ed Gore.
