Indianaplis Man Hanged by Mob After Assaults
James Dillard alias George Moore, an Indianapolis Black man, who attacked Mrs. Milton Davis and Mrs. John A. Lemon of Haddon township, was seized by a mob at Sullivan after arrest in Lawrenceville. He was hanged at a cross road near Carlisle four miles south, within hours of the capture, in front of about five hundred spectators. No shots were fired and no brutality occurred, though some favored burning. The mob moved the prisoner from jail to the hanging site and released noose tight at about eight in the evening. Dillard had pleaded for humane treatment and for sending his body to Indianapolis for his mother and sister.
