Mrs. John Morgan and Mrs. O Woodward of Linton visited Mr. and Mrs. Lee Grass west of town Sunday and Monday. Akin’s offers a full line of sweaters from 50 cents up. Mrs. Lydia Smith spent Friday in Sullivan.
Dr. J N Hurty reports October statistics will show a marked rise in typhoid across Indiana with estimates exceeding twenty percent. He notes cases in every county, an epidemic at Loogootee in Martin County, and the south part of the state most affected.
Except for the Ruth Circle masquerade at Palmer Ridgway hall, Halloween in Carlisle went by with little mischief. Youths attempted stunts but were kept under close watch by special police and abandoned the pranks, returning home after a quiet night.
Mrs. Clara Higgins spent Friday in Sullivan with Miss Abbie Burnham. Miss Helen Akin visited Saturday and Sunday with her cousin Edgar W. Akin Jr and wife while en route to Evansville from Terre Haute.
Pearl Hawkee suffered a crushed right leg when a Jay Baller machine jerked forward after a horse spooked, throwing his leg into the machinery. The accident occurred near New Lebanon on J. AL Leonard’s farm while hay was being worked. Hawkee, who moved from Dugger last February, is married to N. D. Risher’s daughter and has four children. He was treated by physicians and returned home to the D. Smith Clark farm, with a lengthy recovery ahead.
Mrs. Nancy Carter Williams, reputedly the oldest woman in the state, died Monday at her home near Burns City Martin County. She was 102 years and eight months old. A hip fracture from a fall a few months earlier is believed to have caused complications leading to death.
The new calaboose completed by D. H. Cummins and W. E. K. Marcum was accepted at a special town board meeting held Saturday night in Arthur D. Cutler's law office. Payment of 245 dollars was approved. The building awaits iron cells arrival and installation before use.
O J Cartwright moved his family to Terre Haute last week and bases his traveling sales job there. The Cartwright home has been rented to a Carlisle youth with a wedding planned soon. Chas Hooper moved to a farm in Owen county near Coal City last week and sold Carlisle property to his sister Minnie Lake.
Notice states that from November 1 banking hours will be 8 00 am to 4 00 pm. The notice lists PEOPLES STATE BANK and First NATIONAL BANK as the issuing institutions.
R. T. Walker was in Sullivan. Miss Mary Campbell of Anderson visited her sister Miss Lora V. Campbell assistant principal at Carlisle public schools from Friday to Monday. W. M. Cutler, after several days with his brother Arthur D. Cutler and family, left Saturday for Kinmundy to join relatives before returning to Rankin Illinois.
Seven Carlisle ladies of the Rainbow Club hosted a Halloween party for guests including ladies and gentlemen. Ghosts guided arrivals and fortune telling by Mine Lamont entertained, with games, a Bar num’s menagerie quiz, a witch’s hovel tale, pumpkin plate refreshments, and twenty four attendees.
