Obituary of Joel M Pirtle of Sullivan County

Joel McCoy Pirtle, born October 18 1837 in Sullivan County, died May 17 at age 72 years 6 months 29 days. He married Sarah Jane Wilson. two children Ower Pirtle and Mrs Edward McCammon survive with the wife predeceasing him. A lifelong resident, he was well known locally. Remains interred at Snyder cemetery.

Rail upgrades cut Terre Haute Evansville trip time

The Terre Haute and Evansville line will reduce time by one third once three new giant passenger locomotives are delivered in September. Each costs about $60 000 and will match the Pacific type engines in speed. The 35 mile per hour schedule will become 54 mph with full Pullman service, shortening the trip from about three hours to under two. The road will revise its entire timetable after the engines enter service.
