Bond Holders Buy Mine Property At Public Auction

The Chicago Carlisle Coal Company mines at Carlisle and Shelburn were sold at Sullivan court house by receiver Coleman of Holtzman and Coleman Indianapolis. Bondholders led by George R. Maclean bought the Carlisle property for 55 000 after initial bids failed and liens and taxes were addressed.

Carlisle Observes Memorial Day With All Stores Closed

Memorial Day on Tuesday May 30 will be quietly observed in Carlisle. Banks stores and the newspaper will close for the full day and normal business resumes Wednesday morning. Many locals plan trips to Indianapolis to attend the automobile races at the Speedway.

Gordon-Hewitt Players Open Carlisle Visit

The Gordon-Hewitt Players, a stock company visiting Carlisle for three days, opened with their first performance last night. This year’s cast totals fourteen, up from eight in previous seasons, as they tour the region.

Death of James N. Roberts Prominent Carlisle Merchant

James Nelson Roberts, a longtime Carlisle Indiana merchant and farmer, died at his home at age 74. Born October 28 1847 at Harpers Ferry Virginia he lived in Ohio Iowa and Indiana before returning to Carlisle. He and Caroline Long married February 7 1883 and had three sons Raymond Louis Elliott. he helped organize the Carlisle Building and Loan Association and served as its first treasurer. He was a director of People State Bank and active in Carlisle Presbyterian Church.
