Tornado Cuts A Path Across County In Carlisle Area

A devastating tornado struck Sullivan county passing through Haddon and Jefferson townships near Carlisle on a Friday afternoon. It killed one man, Bert Ines, and left many homes, a school, and livestock destroyed. The path began near Flat Rock Illinois and moved northeast, narrowing near Carlisle. Several families including the Lisman, Morris, Lambright, Hamilton, and Shelton households were affected, with injuries to Mrs. Morris and others. The Texas school and nearby farms suffered severe damage, while Miss Nellie Waddell taught at the destroyed Cockle Burr school. Rescue workers aided countless residents as the storm moved onward toward the state road.

Carlisle relief effort gains rapid funds after tornado damage

Immediate relief began Friday for tornado victims in Carlisle with a Saturday meeting of businessmen at People State Bank. A relief committee led by Kixmiller mobilized, pledges topped $1,509 including a $225 civic drive. Outside towns Sullivan and Freelandville contributed, while Hines family aid, clothing, groceries, and utensils were sent. The paper notes continued fundraising and ongoing assistance as the crisis unfolds.
