The piece urges strict enforcement of weight limits on rock and gravel roads during thaw conditions. It notes heavy hauling can damage roads funded by taxpayers and implies existing laws suffice to safeguard infrastructure if properly applied.
H J Minneskesky of the National Biscuit Co visited the store of R W Akin's Son Saturday to demo the company's products. A display featured cakes crackers and wafers with samples given away. Many ladies visited the display and Minneskesky praised the interest shown.
Carlisle will not hold a town election on the first day of May. Senate Bill No. 75 alters election timing to the first Tuesday after the first Monday in November 1905 and every four years. Incumbents extend until Jan. 1, 1906, with officers elected thereafter serving four-year terms. The law also expands town powers over trains and streetcars, impounding animals, and funding public utilities, with various governance changes for marshals and trustees.
A one mile long train leaves Carlisle station. The conductor hops onto the caboose at the caboose arrival, then walks forward to the engine as the train travels. At Paxton four miles away from Carlisle the conductor steps off the engine. He rides none of that distance and walks the remaining length to the engine, totaling four miles ridden and zero walked.
Daniel A. Bonner of Vincennes a Hulman & Co. representative and longtime Republican figure in the Second district cannot meet obligations. He has turned property to creditors, owning stores at Decker and Hazelton. Liabilities about 635,000 with assets around 20,000.
Trustees take charge of band instruments and property and plan an immediate reorganization with a manager and director. No meeting was held last Saturday. A business like method aims to improve discipline and output for spring and summer.
Chas H Snavely of the Stratten loan firm filed an affidavit before Squire Robert Kirkham in Sullivan accusing John Toney of perjury in an affidavit used to secure a horse loan. Toney fled when officers arrived, and reports say he moved to another state.
The post office department declares Best Manufacturing Company of Valparaiso a fraud. It lured women with a 20 dollar per hundred rate for writing short letters and charging 75 cents to buy a ladies protector. Victims paid fees then earned 25 cents per letter they submitted. mail is confiscated.
A party at John Hoke's home thirty four miles south of Carlisle on March 12 celebrated Mrs. Hoke's 56th birthday. Relatives enjoyed an elegant dinner and gifts were received. Music featured singing with piano, plus about 30 Victor records ranged from fine vocal numbers to humorous tunes, performed by guests William Hoke Mrs. Austin Wortman Helen Lisman Eliza Bates C. A. Smith and the Hoke sisters Bessie Lou Anna Lillian.
The county board appointed Richard Bailey as engineer and Isaac Douthitt and John Sisson as viewers to oversee three rock roads in Haddon township under the three mile law. The J. F. Aumbaugh et al system north of town is one mile, ordered July 5, 1904. the Ira Snyder et al system northeast of town is 1.4 miles, ordered July 5, 1904. and the Richard Hackett et al system southeast of Carlisle is 2.4 miles, ordered June 6, 1904.
D. W. Norton & Co. a contracting firm with offices in Vincennes and Terre Haute that built sidewalks brick streets sewers and similar work in this part of Indiana has entered voluntary bankruptcy. Liabilities are listed at 73000 with assets of 37000. The firm repaired the Gill township levee last year and there are creditors in the area.
Signs of spring appear with birds and robins returned and trains running on time. Children play marbles while workers prepare for cleaning campaigns and painters and paper merchants gear up for a new season. Households ready to clean as hats reappear and streets show mud.
John C Chaney of Sullivan becomes a member of the U S House, succeeding Robert W Miers as congressman from Indiana’s Second District. This marks the second time Sullivan County native achievement in this office following John W Davis of Carlisle.
A Paxton young man who bragged about kissing his first girl recalls the tease by friends. When asked where he kissed her, he replied on the back porch, turning the moment into a humorous local store of lore.
Mrs H M Vaughn traveled to Muncie last Thursday to visit her son Charles B Vaughn for a two week stay.
The Sullivan circuit court March term begins Monday March 20 and runs to April 22. Grand and petit juries are drawn with members including Eddie Ryland Turman township Marion Truitt Fairbanks probate and more. Grand jurors report March 20 and petit jurors report March 27 at the court house.
