Social notes from Sullivan Vincennes and area

Mr and Mrs Arthur Neal were in Sullivan Friday. G A Ridgway and son Leland were in Vincennes Friday afternoon. Owen Collins visited friends in Sullivan Sunday. Herman French of Terre Haute was here Sunday to visit the Lemen family. Ada Kivett left Tuesday for St Petersburg Florida for about three weeks.

Reverend Davis to Speak on Prohibition in Carlisle

Rev J J Davis of Indianapolis will address Carlisle at 2 30 p m Sunday March 5 under Flying Squadron Foundation auspices. The lecture advocates state and nationwide prohibition and highlights temperance impact on physical culture and morals. Davis, former chair of physical culture at Lawrence University and ex secretary of Montrose County Y M C A, speaks with persuasive authority. The event is free and open to all.

Town Lost Case Over Street Tax Ruling

In Carlisle versus Joe Rooksberry a Sullivan court ruled the town failed to notify the defendant properly before street tax collection of 3.00 dollars. Squire John Watson held that notice must be given in person with time and place before any tax for street work can be enforced. The case may be dropped and future notices will follow the ruling.

Shepherd and Ward Purchase Terre Haute Restaurant

W B Shepherd and Harry Ward have bought a restaurant and rooming house on Ninth street Terre Haute and assumed management Friday. W T Alsop arranged the deal and Shepherds will relocate Saturday to run the business with Ward remaining to assist.

Carlisle Boys Defeat Vincennes In Close District Basketball Clash

Carlisle High School defeats Vincennes 26 to 21 at their home gym in a hard fought district game. Standout guards Kixmiller and Scott for Vincennes and Wilkinson and Waddell for Carlisle sparked the action, with Hume leading Carlisle’s scoring and Smith for Vincennes repeatedly finding the mark. The first half finished 10-9 in Carlisle’s favor, and Carlisle pulled away late to seal the win.

Henry French Dead at 90 Retired Farmer and Sullivan County Native

Henry French aged 90 died at his son's home Homer French late Wednesday after several weeks of age related illness. Born in 1826 in Gill township he was a son of General French, an early Sullivan County settler, and lived on a two hundred acre family farm near Merom station where he passed away.
