Wm. Cummins 47, a Carlisle coal miner recently at Shelburn and Princeton, was struck and killed by a Baltimore and Ohio train near Princeton depot while allegedly sitting on the track. Witnesses and the coroner said liquor may have caused drowsiness, with the body later taken to Lowe morgue and burial in Carlisle after a Friday funeral. He leaves a son Earl and two daughters Bessie and Emma, plus two sisters and a brother.
John W. Cooper was milking a cow when a calf kicked him. He fell and broke two bones behind the ankle while at his barn. Dr. W A Lisman treated the injury and Cooper is laid up for several weeks.
Ed E. Walters, student at Indiana University Bloomington, returns home for summer break. Miss Vena Boushey leaves Vincennes after visiting her brother Walter. Mrs. Wm. Hamke and daughter travel to Sullivan to visit relatives. Albert Wallace spends Sunday with family in Linton. Miss Lillian Kerkhof visits Vincennes and is accompanied home by Miss Louise Boushey visiting her brother Walter.
The &. & T. H. will operate a special excursion to Evansville and back on Sunday June 20 1997. The train departs Carlisle at 8 30 a m and arrives Evansville 11 00 a m. Return on the special train at 7 30 p m. Round trip fare is 1 50. J H Gilliland Agent.
Miss Oda B. Johnson of Wa bash spent Friday to Monday with Joseph Correll and family, visiting and socializing in the area.
Mrs Pauline Isabelle Whalen wife of Dr Jn Whalen dies at her Carlisle home after a year of chronic illness. Born in Carlisle to John and [unreadable] Litsobin she lived with her aunt in Shadkeeperth and married Dr Whalen. Survived by husband two daughters and her father with two brothers. Funeral held Ledgerwood Street Carlisle with Rev Daniel Ryan officiating. Many friends attended from nearby towns. Interment in local cemetery.
