James I Speake and his grand daughter Miss Cornelia Oxle were in Sullivan Saturday. Mrs. Mary Strnley of Terre Haute spent Friday south of town with Mrs. Flora Haddon.
A lightning bolt struck a large barn 1.5 miles north of Paxton causing a fire that destroyed sixteen tons of hay and straw and $1000 in loss with $600 insurance. Three horses were saved by the Eaton family before neighbors arrived. Roof damage also hit a Nash grainery and county phone service was crippled by the Monday storm.
Lawrenceville wins 4 to 2 at Carlisle amid eight errors by the White Sox. Glenn held the Sucker State to one hit while Lawrenceville scored all four runs on miscues. Lawrenceville shortstop's fielding and pitcher Glenn stand out. batteries were Glenn and Taylor for Carlisle, McDivvitt and Greff for Lawrenceville.
Mary May Grubaugh four months old daughter of Mr and Mrs Edward Grubaugh died at home in northeast town Tuesday morning from summer complaint. Funeral conducted at home Wednesday at 2:00 PM with interment in Oaktown cemetery.
W. T. Alsop and son George were at Huron on Tuesday and Wednesday for business. Richard Eddleman and family from Vincennes arrived Friday evening to visit relatives and friends.
George A. Smith known as Uncle George of Carlisle died July 2 at his daughter Jennie Bensinger’s home in Terre Haute after years of failing health. Born March 5, 1828 in Vermont New Hampshire he was 86 years old. A railroad engineer for decades he lived in Carlisle since 1867 after working in Emison Indiana. Survived by one daughter and several grandchildren including Dollie Bensingly. Funeral at Carlisle M E church with Rev. S. Reid officiating. interment in town cemetery.
The Vincennes District of the Methodist Episcopal church closed its annual Hymera session with Rev J H Furry delivering the closing sermon. Street meetings were led by Rev Joseph Pope and Rev Will Huff. Speakers included Rev Ray Ragsdale and Rev L Peck. The conference voted to request Bishop Leete to return to the next Indiana conference and reappoint Rev W E Biddle as district superintendent. The next meeting will be in Plainville in July 1915 and an evangelistic conference at Oaktown in October.
A late Saturday night incident in uptown involved a beer bottle crashing through an open window at the Shepherd and McCann pool room. Five shots were fired from the upstairs room, but no injuries were reported as occupants fled the scene.
Mrs J N Roberts entertained at six o clock on Thursday evening last with Misses Carrie Crackle Edith Jennie Alsop of Vincennes Bernice McConnell Glenn Starner Herman Waggoner How Shepherd Carl Shaler and Meredith Reed of Vincennes among the guests it was a chatter filled social hour.
