Indiana native James Whitcomb Riley, famed Hoosier poet, died Saturday night at his Indianapolis home from paralysis. He suffered a first stroke in 1910 and a third stroke Saturday proved fatal. Riley, 638 years old, began as a sign painter before entering newspaper work and turning to poetry.
The famed Hoosier poet, renowned for his quaint regional dialect, gained fame through his verses and accumulated a substantial fortune from the sales of his writings.
David N. Curry made a business trip to Sullivan Saturday. David Shake returned home Saturday from Sullivan, where he had been visiting relatives. Mrs. Curtis Curtis, and daughter, of Terre Haute, came Sunday for a visit with her parents, near Bethlehem.
The Haddon Township District schools hold their annual commencement on Friday night August 11 at Providence Christian church. Rev Oscar E Kelley will deliver the address, with T C Wood ward township trustee arranging. Thirty one graduates will receive diplomas including Harry Brodie, Helen Bailey, Don Carrico, and others. Richard Park will present.
Miss Bereniece McConnell hosted a Tuesday afternoon reception for her guest Verle Steiner of Morrison Illinois at the Akin home. The event featured lawn conversation fortune telling with cards and a Ouija board and refreshments of sherbet and cake. Attending were Mrs W D Brown and several Sullivan and Richmond area friends.
Postmaster Tilghman Ogle received word from Washington that two motor routes would be created from the Carlisle office to begin July 24. Route A will be served by Ozro Latshaw later resigning, with Ed Pirtle temporarily filling the vacancy. Route B assigned to Paul R. Shepherd. Ten motor routes replace about double that number of wagon routes, redistricting rural free delivery across Sullivan county and touching Sullivan, Sullivan, Farmersburg, Merom and Shelburn.
J. B. Cushing was guest of James Nicholson in Hymera on Sunday. Arthur Morris and family from Terre Haute visited relatives near Carlisle on Sunday.
