A letter from Town Attorney Arthur D. Cutler to Frank Starner states Carlisle must call a special election to fill the town marshal vacancy after Robert Wilson resigned then briefly withdrew his resignation. The board’s actions were deemed illegal, leaving Carlisle without a marshal until election.

Church Dedicated In Carlisle With All Day Services

The new Christian church in Carlisle was dedicated Sunday with all day services. Sunday School drew 363 attendees, and the collection totaled 59.87 dollars. Sermons were given by Rev. L. V. Barbre, Rev. J. M. Vawter, and Rev. S. D. Dutcher. A 30 member choir provided special music throughout the day. A community dinner followed the morning services in the John G. Frazee building. This dedication is remembered by Carlisle Christians.

Miners to Vote on Substituted Fining Clause

The United Mine Workers of America District 11 agreed after five days to refer the substitute fining clause to a referendum among members. They also sought an extension of time for the temporary contract terms while the vote is conducted. The joint committee framed the proposition, defended by Secretary P H Penna of the Operators' Association.

Padgett and Bishop Tie the Knot in Pleasantville

Samuel E. Bishop and Miss Lydia Bishop were married at the M E church in Pleasantville with Rev Willis Winninger officiating. The groom, son of James Bishop, recently discharged from the U S Cavalry, and the bride, daughter of Mrs F F Padgett and a popular Jefferson township schoolteacher, will reside on a farm in Jefferson township.

Measles Prevalent In State Health Bulletin June

The state board of health June bulletin lists measles as the most prevalent disease, with 2,588 deaths and a total birth rate of 17.9. It notes city rates, county comparisons, and deaths by age, with tuberculosis and pneumonia also cited and regional city death rates for Indianapolis, Evansville, Fort Wayne, Terre Haute, and South Bend. Colored births total 61, with a male majority.

Frazee Defeats Cunningham in Checker Series at Flying Eagle Studio

Local merchant John G. Frazee defeated Frank Cunningham ex county surveyor of Sullivan in a ten game checkers series at the Flying Eagle studio. Frazee won six games reclaiming his former honors after Cunningham held the lead in prior meetings.

First New Wheat Marketed by Ogle and Greenfield

Til Ogle and Ellis Greenfield marketed the first new wheat of the season last week. Ogle’s wheat graded No 2 to No 4 with prices from 89 to 93 cents per bushel. Greenfield’s wheat was No 2 quality and sold for 93 cents per bushel.

Attempted death by Miss Monta Cochran near Carlisle

Miss Monta Cochran a 16 year old daughter of Daniel Cochran, farmer five miles west of Carlisle, attempted suicide Sunday morning by Paris green as family were at church. A neighbor found her and a physician saved her life. she had been in poor health recently.
