Carlisle observed the Fourth with a quiet July 4 in town as stores closed early and residents split between picnics travel to Bicknell or Oaktown for the American Legion celebration. Oaktown drew a good crowd from Knox and Sullivan counties for a parade amid light rain in the afternoon.
The Woman's Missionary Society of Providence Church plans an Ice Cream Social in the church yard next Saturday night July 10 inviting all residents to attend.
Henry Hines from Sullivan visited relatives here on Saturday, spending time with family members and sharing news of his travels.
Attorney Louis Meier for Richard Orndorff and thirteen others protests a proposed 51 000 bond issue to build a township school on Skinner hill southwest of Carlisle. A public hearing is set for Tuesday July 20 at 10 a.m. in the Carlisle high school to hear supporters and opponents.
Esther Stoelting and Russell Enochs were married at the M E parsonage in Carlisle by Rev A L Williams. The couple, Jefferson township natives and Pleasantville high school graduates, will honeymoon in Bay View Michigan until about October 1. Enochs will work as second cook and Mrs Enochs as a waitress at the Terrace Inn during their stay.
The Labor Party at a convention nominated county candidates Sheriff John L. Stewart Commissioner 1st District James Powers Commissioner 2nd District James Butler Prosecuting Attorney Perry Miller Treasurer John Gravemier.
W. T. Ferguson traveled to Vincennes on Saturday for undisclosed duties or events, with local observers noting his presence in the city.
For the first time Carlisle will not have a jail as Michael Ladson agrees to buy the jail building and the adjoining lot for 100 dollars. The town keeps the two steel cages while the rest transfers with the sale. The jail has seen no prisoners in years and prisoners can be sent to the county jail at Sultiven. The act challenges jail sympathy arguments.
Walter Hume, a former Carlisle High School graduate now in Los Angeles, returned with his wife Josephine Cantonwine for a visit to his parents Mr and Mrs Joe Hume. They were married in Los Angeles on June 24 and began a honeymoon trip on June 25.
About fifteen automobiles loaded with boosters for the Oak town celebration traveled from Oaktown to Carlisle on Saturday after a band selection, then proceeded to Pleasantville and other towns for further festivities.
Miss Mildred Risher traveled to Vincennes on Saturday to spend time with her aunt Mrs. Till Shephard and family.
