Special Judge Crumpacker in Valparaiso circuit court ruled that an omitted section in the Nicholson law, prohibiting minors in saloons, is not punishable since the codification act repeals such laws. The decision suggests Carlisle trustees pass an ordinance to cover the offense locally.
Charles W. Welman of Sullivan traveled to Washington yesterday to confer with Democrats about the congressman nomination on the Democratic ticket. The Washington Herald reports Welman as a candidate and notes he would not concede the nomination to Cy Davis.
John D. Prose the popular barber is appointed carrier on rural free delivery route No 1 out of Carlisle to succeed John H. Johnson who resigned. Prose selects Rob Wilson as substitute carrier and will begin carrying the mail February 1.
John A. Riddle announces his candidacy for judge of the Fourteenth Judicial Circuit, seeking Democratic support in Greene County. The Citizen notes his popularity, oratory, and legal experience, and says he would be a fit and capable judge if nominated and elected.
A water tank near Paxton will complete eight tanks along the BE and T railroad. Other tanks are at Evansville, Ft. Branch, Patoka, Vincennes, Seifert, Honey Creek, and Terre Haute. Sullivan’s tank is excluded as it will be replaced by the Paxton tank due to Sullivan water quality.
May Beers qualified Saturday as administratrix of the estate of her deceased husband Levi L. Beers and filed in the Sullivan circuit court clerk’s office a bond for 2200 dollars with Claude A. Kids and Thos Rinsinger as sureties. Hamet D. Hinkle is attorney for Mrs Beers.
Wallace Bruce Amsbury, noted humorist and literary interpreter, entertained at the Methodist church Thursday night as part of the Epworth League lecture course. He performed humorous and poignant pieces including Opie Reid and Riley verses, drew applause after the middle of the program, and hinted at planned visits to Sullivan with a final lecture set for February 15 by Rev. J. P. Brushingham of Chicago.
J D Howard supervised loading of ten tons of timothy hay for Winter Haven Florida last Friday. The hay owned by W W Howard of Jefferson township was sent to his son Elmer Howard. Freight runs about nine dollars per ton and Florida markets pay twenty five dollars per ton, with bale sales after arrival yielding about fifteen dollars per bale equivalent to thirty three dollars and seventy five cents per ton.
The Terre Haute Star and Indiana papers urge funds to aid the search for Richmond Byers reported missing from Seelyville in May 1904. Despite follow up clues, no trace has been found. a Missouri sighting proved false. Father Dr. L S Byers exhausted means in the hunt. contributions will be used judiciously.
A large workforce is at shaft No 1 of Carl Isle Coal and Clay Co half a mile north of town with coal expected to be mined in about six weeks. The complex includes a tall wooden tipple, engine house, boiler room, blacksmith and carpenter shops, offices, and electrical dynamo. An initial force of about 40 will operate three shifts with plans to expand to 150 miners by next fall as output shifts to distant markets.
Rev. T. H. Willis formerly of this city now of Connersville signed papers yesterday to deed his 100 acre farm near the city in Lawrence County to W. A. Lagan who farms beside the Willis land. Price not released but believed about 75 dollars per acre.
C. H. Buck of Vincennes spent Friday in town on business matters.
A state chemist reports high rates of adulteration in foods and drugs from Indiana samples. Vinegar and olive oil show extreme contamination while oleomargarine passes for creamery butter. Grocers express support and plan to publish test results and brands not up to standard.
