Harold Nash, five, of Carlisle area, nearly died after his brother Carl gave him a teaspoonful of laudanum left by the doctor for a finger injury. The medicine was discovered before full effects appeared. emetics were used and Harold recovered after a hearty supper.
Arthur D. Cutler appointed guardian of William S. Jenkins and John G. Jenkins heirs of George Jenkins, deceased, by Sullivan circuit court judge succeeding the late Capt. Jesse Haddon. Bond set at 1200 dollars with Ed W. Akin and Charles T. Alin as sureties.
Sullivan circuit court heard final report in Eli Marquett et al vs Nancy Black et al on a proposed 20 000 foot main open ditch to drain Haddon township. The project runs from George W Hale farm near Scottsville to Busseron creek with an estimated cost of 8759 55 and eight foot bottom width. The court will appoint a superintendent and no damages were assessed to any party.
Carlisle residents face a $2.13 tax rate this year, down 96 cents from 1905, while Haddon Township drops to $1.70, a 37 cent cut. The 1906 taxes apply to 1906-assessed property with a park tax pushing Merom to $3.59 per $100. Last year Carlisle had the county’s highest rate. Farmersburg remains at $3.09, and the table details 1905 vs 1906 rates across towns.
Joseph Shepherd president of the Sullivan County Farmers Institute visited Sullivan and Shelburn on Saturday to oversee plans for February meetings. Shelburn hosts February 14 15 Carl isle February 20 21. Pleasantville February 16 will be led by O P Pifer and James Whipps, noted township workers.
The Carlisle Co operative Telephone Co issued 500 new directory cards at Toe News office this week. The cards retain the same style but include 390 names and reflect many changes since last March. A quarterly or triannual update pace is planned.
Paxton completed its brick school building cost eight thousand dollars and opened Monday with Principal Joe Lacey and teachers Miss Minnie Robbins Miss Phena Dean and Miss Maud Daugherty. The old site burned last spring and students moved from three cramped frame buildings near the B and T A depot.
Elmer E. Pifer and Mary A Wolfe sue to partition 1364 acres of land in three tracts in the southwest township. Heirs of John H. Pifer, deeded 1889, defendants are minors nonresidents Harry E. Pifer in Idaho Springs Colorado and Brea in Portland Oregon. Mary Wolfe holds one third. others two fifths each. Case to be considered at March term.
Wm. H. Arnold, manager of the Bellevue mine, attended the dedication of Sullivan's new Masonic quarters on Thursday night and then proceeded to Terre Haute the following day to handle business matters.
