Mrs E A Helder and her children Hazel and Vin came back to Farmersburg Wednesday after visiting sister Mrs Joe Mickle and family. Dr Helder spent several days here and returned Monday. Rev Daniel Ryan was in Sullivan on Wednesday.
Miss Fanny Moran 16 a domestic for Emory Bear near Oaktown died after a coal oil fire exploded while she attempted to start a flame. Wind fed the blaze as her clothing burned away leaving her severely burned before help arrived. She lived in Harrison county previously and had been staying with a married sister in Oaktown.
Alonzo Pifer traveled to Casey Jr on Tuesday to spend three weeks with friends and relatives, enjoying hospitality and local gatherings during the visit.
A new time card for the E T H railroad took effect Monday January 18 2008 at 1 06 am after delays. No 4 north bound now arrives 11 14 pm under the new schedule No 2 north bound still arrives 9 10 am No north bound daily except Sunday arrives 3 29 pm south bound changes affect mail routing causing rural carriers delays and Sunday mail absence in Carlisle. The Chicago and Florida Limited No 93 now stops for passengers at Carlisle aiding local business gains.
Judge Henderson quashed the affidavit against W B Shepherd of Carlisle for allowing non family in his saloon on August 4 1907. The case filed August 6 1907 before Squire Kirkham moved to Usrey on venue, tried August 28 without a jury, and Shepherd was fined 10. Arthur D Cutler of the place was Shepherd’s attorney.
At a Tuesday afternoon meeting of The First National Bank of Carlisle stockholders the directors elected for the year were Wm A Lieman Wm Trimble J B Alumbaugh Salathiel Boone R T Willis A D Cutler and D J Mathes. Officers chosen were W A Ligman president J F Alumbanga first vice president Wm Trimble second vice president Delaskie J Mathes cashier and U T Alumbaugh assistant cashier.
The Woman's Relief Corps WO 225 met in Kivetts Hall on Tuesday January 6 to install officers for 1908. Officers include President Ida Starner and Senior Vice President Sarah Hoover. The organization noted past work such as raising a day at public grounds in 1907 and repairing a soldier's daughter's roof after a nail storm. The corps meets on the first and Tuesdays of each month in the Carlisle Opera House.
The lodge held its regular weekly meeting and installed officers for the upcoming term. New officers include N. G. W. C. Walker, V. G. Chas. Al Schu, Rec. See’y J. F. Sproati, Bin. See’y K. D. Denison, Treas. Jakob Wilson, and Trustee W. J. Brentlinger.
A mass convention of Hadden township Republicans convened at Rivett's hall in Rivett Friday January 10 at 2 09 p m. C B Willis chaired the meeting Arthur D Cutler was elected chairman Edley W Rogers serving as secretary and precinct committeemen and delegates to the Bloomington district convention were chosen. Precincts names and delegates include John E M Purcell W J Curtner John W Cooper C B Wallis with H T Atumbaugh and John W Cooper as delegates and W J Curtier C B Willis as alternates. The convention endorsed the National and State administrations and backed Congressman John C Chaney.
L M Vancleave and wife and the former's brother R S Vancleave of Hoopeston Ill were summoned Saturday to Hoopeston for the funeral of the former's sister Mrs Perry Hobson. R S Vancleave returned to Carlisle with them Monday.
