Maxwell Demands Sheriff Title Amid Courtroom Tussle

Around two o'clock last Friday Vigm P Maxwell with bondsmen Crowder and Wolfe appeared in Sullivan court seeking recognition as Sullivan county sheriff. He cited a governor's letter naming him legal sheriff and requested duties and salary. Judge Harris declined to rule, citing insufficient official action, and Maxwell pressed Dudley for the office, while Dudley insisted he remained legally sheriff. The scene moved to the clerk's office with notices and subpoenas to follow.

Electric Line Planned From Vincennes To Sullivan

S. W. Williams of Vincennes, president of Western Indiana Traction Co, visited Sullivan to discuss an electric line from Vincennes to Sullivan. Two proposed routes include Oak Town Carlisle Paxton and Pleasantville Dugger. the Carl isle route is favored for directness and profitability. The company, formed December 8 1902 with 100000 capital stock, plans to sell 4000 shares and begin work next spring, aiming to connect Terre Haute Evansville and Princeton through future expansions.

A crowd of youths rented a big blob sled Monday night and traveled five and a half miles to Ed Kite's. The moonlit snow shined bright as a new dollar while the party enjoyed the outing though some girls failed to stay warm. Henry Fritzlan Dead at 38 in Coal Mine Area

Henry Fritzlan aged 38 formerly of Carlisle died Thursday of pneumonia after an illness since December 25 1902. He lived near Shelburn for three years and worked at the Bogle coal mine 34 miles southeast of Shelburn. He leaves a wife four children and one sister Mrs Riley Knotts. Body brought to Carlisle Friday. Funeral Saturday at 2 at the Methodist church conducted by Rev Washburn. Interment Engle cemetery.

Wintery Weather Buries Town in Heavy Snow

A fierce snow storm blanketed the area Saturday night with eight inches of new snow, on top of ice. Rain and sleet followed by continued snow kept streets quiet, while Sunday brought violent winds and deep drifts. Temperatures plunged to five to fourteen below zero by Monday, the coldest start to winter yet. Sleighing improves as ice houses fill and train delays rise amid fuel shortages and statewide cold hardships.
