The Only Legal Hanging in Sullivan County
Henry Todd, a Black man from Haddon township, was hanged near the Sullivan depot on April 2, 1858, for the murder of Mack Underwood. The execution followed a 1858 trial in Sullivan Circuit Court. Sheriff Walker Brodie carried out the sentence amid reluctance, and Todd’s body was buried secretly on the Holder farm as locals guarded the grave.
