Miss Mabel Ridgway and her grandmother Mrs. Nancy Wortman traveled to Carlisle to sign a pension voucher. A brick heated and wrapped in blankets caused a blaze in the buggy’s lap robes after flames were fanned by air, but the fire was quickly extinguished with no injuries. Two heavy lap robes were badly damaged.
Louis Ludlow reports in the Terre Haute Star that Chaney’s farm bill failed in the House Agriculture Committee. The secretary of agriculture now can use part of the appropriation for experimental purposes. Chaney will meet Secretary Wilson to push for at least one demonstration farm in the Second Indiana district.
Last Saturday marked Ground Hog Day with sun and Mr Ground Hog returning to his home for another nap. The date Feb 2 is the official appearance day by act of the Indiana legislature, reaffirming the six week winter outlook.

Chas H Ridgway gravel road contractor sells his contracting business and outfit for $5000 to Carlisle Construction Co. The buyers include J F Alumbaugh as president James Boone as superintendent and Dr J R Whalen as secretary treasurer. They acquire 10 teams of horses barns camping outfits wagons scrapers engines rock crushers and more. An unfinished Richard Hackett gravel road project southwest of Carlisle near Scottsville is included.
W A Ive of Carlisle area reports three horses lost in six weeks. Initially blamed on poisoning, experts now think smut on fodder caused the deaths. Ed Shake nearby also lost a horse last week. Ice previously suffered a house fire on George Cleveland’s farm, heightening his misfortunes.
Letters of administration granted for the estate of the late George W. Brentlinger issued to his son Charles A. Brentlinger. He filed a bond for 2000 dollars with Ed W. and Charles T. Akin as sureties.
J O Whalen of the Paxton area observed his 69th birthday on a Thursday January 31 with relatives hosting a surprise feast. An elegant meal was shared and gifts included a fine umbrella for Mr Whalen along with other presents. Attendees included James Miller and wife with Bernice Mccormick, A L Creager and wife, J H M Purcell and family, Mrs J B Latshaw, Dr J R Whalen and C L Whalen.
Carlisle high school defeated the Sullivan Independents 24 to 10 at the creamery building in Carlisle last Friday night. Sullivan contributed three players from the Sullivan Athletics who claimed the Southern Indiana championship but were hindered by the low ceiling and uneven floor. The lineup lists Waters, C Shepherd, P Shepherd for Carlisle and Johnson, Asdell, Giles, Boone, Conner, Howard, Helms, with Boon as umpire and Helderman as referee.
At a Friday directors meeting in Carlisle the company voted not to connect with the Paxton based telephone firm or allow its wires on Carlisle poles. Paxton had petitioned for both privileges but Carlisle stockholders opposed the move.
